Guest guest
Sue, You might try a medicated shampoo and CAREFULLY follow the directions. I would try that, even if I bought it from the vet's, before I pay for an office visit. Good luck and God bless, Lexie
Guest guest
Check her ears. Sometimes an ear infection can cause a dog to stink. Take her to the vet. She may be in pain.
Guest guest
Well, I guess I should have posted what we have done... we have tried 3 different shampoos on her already. And her ears are one of the first things we checked, she is prone to ear infections with those flopppy ears, and it is easy for her to get them if her ears get wet.... the odor is definately coming from her coat. It lessens when she gets a bath, and gradually increases over time, and her coat starts to feel weird... Brushing her helps somewhat, but doesn't make it go away. We did take her to the vet, and she blew it off. Looking for another one.... > > Check her ears. Sometimes an ear infection can cause a dog to stink. Take > her to the vet. Guest guest
I had a lab one time and he got what the vet called ear magnets. They really had a terrible odor. Just a thought! Dawn E. It's amazing how she reacts to how I am feeling sometimes. We have given her a few extra baths trying to get rid of some smell she is getting. But it keeps coming back. And it really stinks like nothing I have ever smelled before. Poor girl. And when I pet her, her coat starts feeling " thick " , like there is something on her fur. The only thing I could find is something about a yeast infection on her coat. But we can't get it to wash off. We've washed her bed, don't know what else to do. Has anybody ever heard of this? Or know how to get rid of it? I just thought I'd ask before we start taking her to the vet. My son wants to give her another bath, but it's gonna start being way to cold out, so I want to make sure, or atleast try to, that the bath is going to be more effective this time. I know, this is funny posting about my dog.... but she is so special to me And she really stinks! lol Her name is Mistie and she is 11 yrs old, and still has a bit of puppy in her yet. Her favorite way to play is when I put a blanket over her head, and call her name or touch her head or the tip of her nose. She is so funny. And she knows all kinds of tricks too, she has always been very easy to train. Smart girl. Well thanks for listening anyways. Hope somebody has an idea about this. Thank you. Gratefully Yours, Sue.. Guest guest
Hi Sue My carrin terrier gets yeast on his skin several times of year and just bathing wont cure it, you need to take your Beagle to the Vet and she will give you something oral to take as well as a special shampoo. I believe its oral nystantin, cant remember, but yes just bathing alone is not going to help- you need to attack from inside as well as outside and the shampoo that you get is special too. Hope this helps. in DC This is really off topic_______________________maybe somebody can help or has an But I have a Beagle, she is a wonderful dog, and sleeps right beside my bed all the time. Guest guest
If It's a sweet/sour kind of smell, and she has a yellow , crusty discharge of any type on her skin, it is yeast infection and she will need to go to the vet to get rid of it. You can't wash it off. I was a vet tech for 10 years. This can lead to very bad sores on her skin and a terrible infecton. Also check in her ears. Yeast is very common in the ears. It will have a bad odor and and a brown discharge. If she has this in her ears, Depending on the severity you can try to use an ear cleaner twice daily that has Chlorhexiderm in it. Otherwise she will need a prescription shampoo and ear cleaner from the vet. I hope this helps. Been waiting for a year and a half for a chance to be a vet tech again. Thank you for letting me feel useful again. =) This is really off topic_______________________maybe somebody can help or has an But I have a Beagle, she is a wonderful dog, and sleeps right beside my bed all the time. Guest guest
Dogs also have anal glands leftover from when it was useful in 'marking their territory'. Older dogs sometimes do not always empty these glands (just inside the anus) when they " poop " and it stinks. Teeth can stink too. Also old dogs do get doggie odor, there are a number of waterless shampoos out there you can spray on and wipe off. Be careful with these though, if they say it has a detangler in it, can be very slippery if it gets on a tile/wood floor, like stepping on a patch of ice. (we " gimps " do not need to be slipping!!!) A rubdown with baby wipes for a quickie works too. Any soap you use to wash your dog will kill all sorts of " cooties " , if you let it set on there for about 8 minutes. That is probably the easiest thing to try first. in NH This is really off topic_______________________maybe somebody can help or has an > > > But I have a Beagle, she is a wonderful dog, and sleeps right beside > my bed all the time. Guest guest
Hi & , I appreciate your input a lot.... I always keep an eye on her ears. She does have medicine for her ears, in the fall she had an ear infection that was bacterial and fungal or yeast, I don't remember. My husband took her that time. And I called for a refill right away because I knew it wasn't going to be enough because I was not just putting it in her ear canal, but I was rubbing it all around the inside of her ear too. One ear was bad, the other was okay. Beings I had enough, I put drops in her other ear too. But my husband said that it was brough to the vets attention twice about her coat feeling icky, and he let her know that it was coming back after we washed her. And that it did have an odor to it. She did have " black " spots on her paws. She was licking them a lot, so we washed them, and eveytime she would lick, I would just say a quick " ahh " , and she would stop, she rarely licks now, and the black spots are gone... Yeah, I know about the glands! It's not that smell. lol She is going to have to go back. , do you know " about " how much that should cost? Last time we took her in, it cost over 200 dollars. For her EAR. My daughter-inlaw thought that was very high. But I've paid more. Maybe I will take her to the humane society till I can find another vet. She doesn't have any sores or other skin conditions of any kind. Other than the smell and the feel of her coat, she is good. She is on rymadil for her hips, could this be a side effect of that medication at all? Just a thought... But thank you guys... a lot. Hope your days have been okay... Guest guest
The licking of her paws and the discoloration is most likely due to a seasonal allergies. that may also be what is causing the odor on her skin. Yeast love warm moist places and if she's licking or chewing at her paws or skin the could cause yeast and it can spread. Allergies in dogs differ than in humans. We tend to get itchy eyes and sneezing and such. They tend to get itchy skin. A vet visit could ramge in price depending on what your vet determines he/she needs to do to corerectly diagnose the problem. Some vets will do a " skin scraping " and look at it under the microscope to see exactly what is on the skin at a celluar level. Some can just look at areas and tell by the appearance what it going on with the skin. As far as the ears, if they are bothering her, they would most likely take samples from them and also look under the microscope. they can see if it is yeast or bacteria, or fungal. Sometimes for fungus, they have to culture it and grow it to tell. Rimadyl would not be a likely cause. But if it is, there is also Deramaxx that can be used instead. Not all vets carry this, but there are alternatives. Typically when going to the vet, you can expect to pay an office visit, any procedures or tests, any medications, and sometimes there are fees for filling them at the vet. I would estimate that here in Texas, a typical cost for skin and ear visit would run about 150-200 dollars all inclusive. Meds for animals are somewhat costly and especially if they need a prescription shampoo or things like that. Sometimes they have allergies to their food and may need prescription food to clear up the problem. I hope this has been somwhat helpful. Take care.
