I had a bulging disc that was pressing on the siatic

nerve .,Yes it did help, but I have nerve damage from

having to go thru PT and steroid shots first, instead

of just going the surgery .

,

Speaking from experience as well, your mom having a discectomy will

remove part of the damaged disc and thus relieve the pressure on the

nerve tissue and alleviate the pain. However, you can bet that it

will not last like most hope. I had a combined discectomy and

laminotomy at L4-5 back in 1994. It did relieve the leg, and buttock

pain for awhile, the end result was much worst. Of course everyone is

different, nevertheless, even after the discectomy at whatever level

or levels, the disc are now weakened further and may not support the

spine within that area thus causing more than one disc to reherniate,

rupture, or bulge.

Degenerative Disc Disease with osteophyte formation

  • 3 years later...

Well I went to the spine specialist yesterday. He said the shots won't do me

any good cause the fragment is floating on my nerve root. So he explained to me

2 surgeries I could have. One is a regular discectomy with a 5 in incision & 6

to 8 week recovery or have a endoscopy discectomy with a 1 1/2 in incision.

Well I chose the latter. My surgery is scheduled for the 20th of Feb if there

is an operating room available. What do you all think of this surgery.

Hugs

Kathy/Kady

L2-L3 There is mild decrease in height & signal intensity of intervertebral

disk w/mild diffuse bulging of the disk annulus.

L-3-L4 Norjal disk & facet joints.

L4-L5 The disk maintains normal height & signal intensity but a small disk

fragment has extruded on the left disk & has migrated superiorly into the left

neural foramen compressing the left l4 nerve root.

L5-S1 Marked decrease in height & signal intensity of the intervertebral disk

w/mild diffuse bulging of the disk annulus & mild fatty replacement of the

adjacent bone marrow. The facet joints are normal.

Then down lower on the paper it saysImpression:Disk herniation at L4- L5 on the

left with a small extruded fragment which has migrated superiorly into the

neural foramen & is compressing the left L4 nerve root.
