Guest guest
hi all, At my doctor's appt the 15th she asked me how I was doing on Oxycodone and I told her the truth. I told her that the more I am up and around the more I have to take. I told reminded her again that walking is very painful for me and that I almost couldn't make it out of Walmart last month I hurt so bad. So she asked if I would like to try these patches listed below and I told her I would love to try something that might give me longer lasting relief as long as I could stay on my normal prescription routine until I knew the patches worked for me as it is hard to get in to see her, she is very busy. So finally I get to try these 2 patches. I haven't gotten them yet but wanted some input from you all and how you like them and what not. Fentanyl patch and Lidocaine patch. I am just now looking them up. If anyone can clue me in on the ups and downs of them, plus your own experiences with them, that would be very appreciated. She kept asked where my pain was. I told her it is in the middle of my back and then also down at L4-5. I told her I have radiculopathy (sp?). She knew that already, I wasn't even sure on how to pronounce it. I got my phone interview for SSI yesterday and she will send out papers for me to go over to make sure they are correct and then I will send them back in or take them personally to their office because I will be up there anyways. So this should be a good thing. Whew! Oh yes, another thing, I gained weight, over my limit, I knew those moon pies were going to do it to me but they are so good but make it more painful to walk with the added pounds. I can't carry weight. The peanut butter and jelly sandwiches didn't help either, I was eating them because I am getting my teeth pulled for dentures and can't chew very well. I usually eat like a bird anyways so I think I can just cut down the portions and hopefully lose a few pounds. How can I exercize? My doctor said to walk around a bit, ug, that just requires more pain meds lol.....boohoo. So, any input on those patches would be great. The pain radiates from my spine but I also know that sciatic nerve goes through the hip on both sides. My normal pain is middle back and left lower back/hip. So where do I put the patch? Wouldn't I put them on the spine from where you would think the pain starts from because of bones rubbing against each other on the nerves? I need all the help/advice I can get. Thanks, Coleen
Guest guest
Colleen, I have tried fentynal in many forms, Patches included. Fentanyl is a very short lived substance(metabolizes quickly, about 1.25 hrs..even with the 100mcg patch i was severly diapointed ot in the Actiq lozonges up to 1200mcg ... very little relief . My dr told me they were purely for " breakthru " pain and not for chronic use. For me, they were a waste of time compared to oxycodone but with pain of such severity(510 mg of oxy/day) not a lot helps but i do kno this they are the shortest acting narcotic i have had and can cost a lot. I didnt notice the patches at all and i was told that fentanyl is strong and even dangerous. I researched it thru many sources and concluded it was more to sell than to help. Good luck finding the right med..it isnt easy. Guest guest
Actually Coleen, the pain is coming from the nerve root on either side of the L4, L5 area. If the pain is mostly on the left side put the patch there. If it is coming from the right put the patch there. Radiculopathy means radiating pain from a nerve root. The patches worked on me very well for a time. In my case I built up a tolerance to medication and had to keep taking more. My Mri showed massive impingement on the nerve root. I had surgery July 30th and I feel great., My neuro said the reason why it was so painful to walk was because the bone grew over the nerve root, and the epidurals and pain patches could no longer reach the affected nerve. Surgery was the last resort for me. The recovery is long but I feel better now than I have for 5 yrs. Guest guest
Hi again Colleen: the first time I used the patch I put one on each side. Later I cut them in half and only used a half on each side. Keep them on for 24 hours. The pain relief will continue even after you remove them. Good luck... Guest guest
I too am on a fentanyl patch. Do NOT cut them in two and do NOT put on more than one unless directed by your doctor. If you have the one with the gel in the middle and cut it into you might overdose! They are one of the strongest, if not the strongest, pain medication prescribed and you shouldn't mess around with them by putting more on than your physician tells you or by cutting them. There was a class action lawsuit years ago where some of the patches leaked and people died. The patches have been repaired and no longer leak but they are not to be taken lightly. I'm sure whoever posted to cut them in two is referring to the Mylan patches which do not have gel in them, but not all patches are the same. It is my understanding that you should place it where the instructions tell you to and not over the place that hurts. Your bone/nerve may hurt but the drug releases into muscle and fat which provides the relief and there may not be enough muscle and/or fat where you place the patch if you try to place it directly on your spine (bone) where it hurts. It has helped me some. I do not understand how you put one on for 24 hours. They are generally prescribed for one patch every three days, but I have to switch them every two days instead of every three days because of the break-through on the third day my neurologist chose to prescribe the switch every two days. Good luck, I hope it helps. > > > > > > hi all, > > > > > > At my doctor's appt the 15th she asked me how I was doing on Oxycodone and I told her the truth. > > > I told her that the more I am up and around the more I have to take. Guest guest
Sage advice, Barb. They really should be used exactly as directed: no trying to change anything without clearing with your doc first. Hope you have gotten them by now, Coleen. Guest guest
HI group, I am going to be seen in the pain clinic next week and was wondering what if any experiences any of you have had with these places? I was mailed a form of 15 pages that asked everything about my background and some if it was intimidating. I know that they have to have a good medical history but this was an inquisistation. Any ideas of how to proceed? I just want to seek out injections maybe--not into looking for more drugs! My husband's ex-wife married a guy who has severe back pain and is on 400mg? of Fentanyl-was told he has to be registered with DEA because of the amount he has to take. That sounds a bit drastic to me, but we all have different pain levels. I've used lidocaine patches quite a bit, it helps some of the pain some of the time. I found no difference in my level of pain being here with all the dampness and humidity. or being in Vegas-for me there's no difference weatherwise on my pain level. Guest guest
Annie. Pain Clinics were a dead end for me. I ended up with my Dr i see regularly(Internal or Adult medicine)as the pain clinics pushed the injections due they are an expensive med and expensive procedure and benifit the dr much more than the patient ( I have been told, read and told as well by DR that the injections are not for chronic pain as they , if used often have bad side effects and very few patients benifit from them (did nothing for me)but the Dr makes a bundle at the expense of risking your health and you most likely wont improve...sourses, a Dr of Pallative Medicine, Head Proffessor of Internal med. at Washington Univ., Data Administrator of billing office, Trainer for EMR(Electronic medical records)I tr5ied to get info from all levels and i was very suprised at some things I learned. The Pain Clinics seemed to be set up to make money rather than help you and had strange ideas about dealing with pain in General, one was so strange that The State Board of Pharmacy closed them down for not labeling the contents of a concoction containing narcotics and other meds in accordance with the labeling act, any way I got a bad Impression. My husband's ex-wife married a guy who has severe back pain and is on 400mg? of Fentanyl-was told he has to be registered with DEA because of the amount he has to take. I found no difference in my level of pain being here with all the dampness and humidity. or being in Vegas-for me there's no difference weatherwise on my pain level. Whew! Oh yes, another thing, I gained weight, over my limit, I knew those moon pies were going to do it to me but they are so good but make it more painful to walk with the added pounds..
