,

There must be something in the air around here. Everyone I have talked to

in SD, Nebr and Minn is having trouble with allergies. It is cold here

tonight - but something must be getting to all of us.

Hope you feel better soon.

P,

My oldest son has really bad sinus allergies.. He started out with the

Zrytec but that didn't do a whole lot for him. Now he is taking the once a

day dose of Allerga which helps alot better. Right now we had to start him on

the antiboitic again. The dr now has me carry a presciption with me so if he

gets sick to fill it. I just called the dr office and they are calling in

more meds one for his cough and wheezing in his lungs. The weather has been

nutty here. one day its warm and sunny and then we have 2 cold rainy days to

real cold days. right now its 11:30am and its cold. i have the heater on. we

are all sick. mostly colds systems.

sure hope you don't suffer anymore.

i take zyrtec too. i like it better than allegra. it is a little more

expensive and my insurance doesn't cover it totally. so i think i will have

to pay $30 instead of $15 but the allergist also said he liked it better. he

has me take it at night. i feel it open my sinuses and i fall asleep alot

easier. i'm not sure if i take it at night because of that, or that i am

allergic to dust mites. all i know is my nose doesn't pour in the mornings

anymore!! i used to have to get up at least 15 min early just to give myself

time to drain!!!

Hi ,

Could you please tell me more about Zyrtec? Allegra has been so good for me

and now it doesn't seem to work as well. Is Zyrtec the pill for allergies

that is supposed to be good for indoor and outdoor allergies? Is it

terribly expensive? There is a Jasmine (sp) tree outside my bedroom window

and when it blooms I get sick -- every year! The other day I just had to

empty the trash so I improvised a mask from an old bra and wrapped it around

my face. I was hoping the neighbors would not look over the wall!

Sincerely,

Patsy

I am also very glad it's just the allergies that I'm dealing with right now.

The teacher I work with also has RA and has been having a lot of trouble

with his knee. He may be looking at joint replacement in the near future.

I take Zyrtec for my allergies I used to be on Clariton-D but then last

year my dr changed to Zyrtec since

Clariton-D was no longer effective for me. I am going to be calling

tomorrow and see if they can't changed my medication. There must be

something else I can take.

It's been rather nice here in Minnesota recently - in the 30's. That's

almost shirt sleeve weather!! Unfortunately we are supposed to get some

more snow this week. Winter isn't over yet.

Hi Patsy,

My insurance pays all but $10 of my medications. However, I have a friend who

told me it costs her $97 for a one month supply of Zyrtec. It comes in the pill

form and is taken once a day. For my friend it works great. Hope this helps.

Multiple Sclerosis and Allergies

There are several key factors that lead many experts to believe that multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease triggered and exacerbated by allergic hypersensitivity to specific food particles. First is the nature of the immune dysfunction that characterizes MS. Evidence suggests that in MS, the protective myelin sheath of the nerves is destroyed via an autoimmune response, whereby the body's own T-cells attack healthy cell proteins both inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS). What specifically prompts T-cells to do this is still not clear, but there is evidence that an immune reaction to food antigens may provide the initial impetus for this response. In an allergic reaction, food antigens stimulate basophils and mast cells to release chemical mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes, causing a wide range of inflammatory responses in the body (and hence allergy symptoms such as asthma, eczema, joint pain, etc). Mast cells and their mediators have also been implicated as important agents for inducing brain inflammation in MS, and mast cells have been specifically found in MS lesions.1,2 Furthermore, stimulated mast cells and their mediators can increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier, allowing the penetration of immune complexes that are normally prevented from direct contact with the CNS.3 This increased access through the blood brain barrier is a key feature of MS. Once past this crucial central nervous system defense barrier, autoimmune invaders may then set off the inflammatory, myelin-destroying processes characteristic of MS.4,5 Based on this scenario, it has been proposed that "multiple sclerosis arises due to the effect of various mediators (histamine and protease) released from the perivascular mast cells after stimulation by some diet factor."6 Interestingly, many symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as gastrointestinal disorders, migraines, fatigue, muscle weakness, impaired coordination, are also symptoms of MS.7 And the geographical distribution of MS has led some to conjecture that differences in food consumption play a major role; MS incidence is lowest, for example, in regions where consumption of gluten-containing grains is low.8 One researcher has tracked the historical development of MS around the world and linked its increasing incidence with the introduction and rising use of cocoa products--and particularly chocolate.7 Many experts, however, recommend proper testing to determine actual allergies before starting MS patients on an allergen-free diet--to avoid the unnecessary elimination of foods. Great Smokies' Comprehensive Antibody Assessment assays a single blood sample to determine immediate (IgE) and delayed (IgG) hypersensitivities to over 120 food and environmental substances, allowing practitioners to readily pinpoint allergic reactions that can play a major role in multiple sclerosis and many other chronic conditions. I know that you are right. I never eat Chinese food anymore cause I don't like the way that I feel afterward. Yesterday, I was at my brother's and they were ordering Chinese. I didn't want to be a bump on the log so I went along with it. I have got to admit. It tasted great and I found it hard to go easy with it. I didn't feel too bad after but today I am extremely dizzy. I know that it was the food. I will try to stay away from now on. It isn't worth it to feel like this. Some day I will smarten up.

Tami,

I would bet dollars to donuts you have developed an allergy to olive

oil. If so, do not use olive oil. You will need to gently test other cold

pressed vegetable oils; any other source should be fine. If your throat is

closing, think about what is happening to your bile duct. There may be a

fat digestive/breakdown issue in which case any oil may cause you problems,

this is why I say you need to gently test other oils. Allergies may be

associated with gallstone formation. While 99% of people do not have a

problem approaching the flush in the normal manner, the reaction you

describe is stressful to you and needs to be sorted out. Always, in all

ways,

Dave

Hi niti et al.,

I too am not doing fabulous. And I agree the whole shot was a bit of a letdown.

But I had a Xolair Party afterwards with my classmates who cheered for me (and

then we got drunk !!!) so that made up for it.

I have been on for a year almost (my anniversary is April 22) and while things

are BETTER they are far from amazing. Well, gotta be thankful for baby steps of

improvement.

12 hours for 24 hours and then take 1 every 12 hours and drink plenty

of water to try to loosen thing sup. The normal dose is 1 at a time,

so you might want to check with your doc and try it. It helped me a

lot.

Take care,

Addy

(feeding evil candy to my dog at the moment - she's got an allergic

ear infection.. Go figure.)

could putty my bathroom with so the idea that there is still room for

improvement helps me keep my morale up.

My father's family has a nose with a downward turn. My brother has

this nose. My mom says I would have it, except for the constant

rubbing of my nose since age two or three from my allergies!

Don't forget the allergic circles under one's eyes! When I have a

bad sinus infection mine make me look like I've got two black eyes.

Yep--I have the black circles most of the time, even on the meds, and I haven't

found the make-up yet that will completely cover the circles or the bags! (I've

tried the white stuff, the green stuff, extra foundation, lighter foundation for

that area, and have even had a cosmetic representative try and has given me

various ideas--I still have the circles and the bags--worse some times than

others...... (Of course, now I have a few wrinkles in other places--age, you

know!)

I know this will sound crazy, but try a little preparation H around your eyes

for the puffyness - just don't get it in your eye.

My allergist when I was a child used to refer to rubbing your nose in an upward

fashion with your index finger as the allergic salute.

Oops, your're right - I had a little glitch there. That motion is

indeed the allergic salute. It's the little crease we all have just

above the end of the nose that is the rabbit sign. Y'all just

reminded me that when I was growing up my little cousin used to ask

me why I had a " round nose " ! It really wasn't round but definitely a

bit misshapen - maybe the tip is kind of full, oh well maybe it is

just a tad round -from all my allergic salutes! I guess that's kind

of like Addy not having the family's downturning nose!
