Butch I'll give my opinion on that cost for fishing. But remember I live

about an hour from the Oregon coast, fishing is a-plenty.

There's no way my husband and I would pay that much to go fishing. Cause if

he goes, so do I. (grin, remembering my last fishing trip and the shark I

caught)

We went to the MN thing as a family .. Our first time to interact with any

lp's or LPA thing, other than of course our daughter. The trip started

poorly with 2 tired adults and 3 kids in a too small car.. We were loaded

down. After the initial " yelling " things cleared up and we found our way to

the Radisson. Oldest son saying all along,'I don't want to go. Do I have to?

I'm too tall " Youngest son, " But mom, what about my baseball games? "

Daughter, " potty please ! " WOW!! and this was before we even got in the

door.. To put it mildly it was quite overwhelming to walk in and see all the

lp. Despite my best efforts, I found myself staring. I couldn't help it and

I hope no one was offended.. We went thru registration and started to hang

out, talking to anyone who was around. We went to the various meetings and

began making friends. I met so many wonderful folks and learned so much. My

13 year old son danced every night. The younger kids swam and played. seemed

like everyone looked out for each other. By Tuesday our oldest was asking if

we could go to the next convention and experiencing great angst over an lp

girl his age.. He wanted to dance with her but was afraid she wouldn't like

him because he wasn't " short enough " . We met other parents who shared

concerns and ideas. No one seemed to mind all our questions. I was

encouraged to hear lps playing instuments (we were told Mira 's hands and

fingers would not allow for that). The fashion show and talent show were

fantastic. Mall of America and Camp Snoopy were a blast. We all made many

new friends and are anxious to attend Nationals again. We did feel out of

place at first but by the end of the week it was more a " family " type of

feeling. The doctors were all we expected and more and we were quite

relieved to find out we have a very healthy 5 yr. old achon! It was her

first time to see any specialists to our knowledge. I look forward to

continuing with LPA and building on the friendships that are started. It was

a great week for us and the whole family is looking forward to Salt Lake

City in 2002. I don't think Toronto will be possible :-(... I wish!! I can

hardly wait to get my pictures back and show them off. I find myself telling

everyone I talk to lately about the convention and was even doing some

education focused towards a local peds doc Sunday. Average people in general

are interested and do care.. Anyway... To those who were there, thanks for

an unforgetable week!! Gigi B.

Reba,

I would suggest going to the " first timer's " get together,

attending several outings which people go in groups and also alone. Also,

lots of times you will find people just sitting out in the lobby just

observing. These people are also great to start up a conversation. You

will find many people are in your shoes and if you observe carefully, you'll

be able to pinpoint them. Just try and go to as many events as possible and

I am sure you will find people who are there to meet other lps as well.. Just

look a little harder.

This year was only our second convention. The first was Atlanta GA and

we were very disappointed with it. This year was much better!!

Some of the things that we were disappointed with and/or think should be

considered for the next convention:

1) parking - all conference info stated that hotel parking was $12 per

day (I even called the hotel and asked if that included in and out

privileges and they said yes)- that is what we budgeted ----- when we

arrive we find that there are only about 6 parking spaces in the hotel

garage for oversized vans and those spaces were taken, garage attendent

says park across the street and tell the hotel and they will take care

of it - hotel says they can't do anything about it - we go and pay the

parking fees, take our receipt and go to our room, later we get to

looking at the receipt we find a notice on the receipt that says we have

to leave this in the vehicle window so we go down to put it in the

window and guess what?? we have a $37 ticket on our van because we don't

have this receipt in there!! we looked again at the signs everywhere

and nowhere did it say that you had to do this, it was only printed on

the receipt --this lot is $20 per day and we have to pay again every

time we go in and out so we are already paying more than we had expected

and now we even have a ticket to pay---- I approached someone with the

conference committee and was basically brushed off w/ there's nothing we

can do, thats not our problem ------ my complaint here is that it

should have been noted in the conference materials that there was

limited parking available in the hotel garage and that other parking was

available at $XXX per day so that those of us driving would have been

prepared.

2) The flowers ordered for the banquet - not good -- they were lovely

roses but way to big for corsages (especially for LP) we couldn't even

use the ones we bought because they were just too big and looked awful

as corsages - more money down the drain - who did the flowers and is

this 'really' what the conference committee was expecting?????

3) banquet pictures - we purchased 2 - one looked great and the other

was snapped without telling us and looks awful - when we told the

photographer (right then) he was like 'oh well' and would not take

another -- more money wasted

4) banquet food/drinks - food was only so-so (not worth the money) and

I know that things are different in another country but we were quiet

surprised that there was no drink served with dinner. maybe it's a

southern thing but here there is always water, iced tea and coffee

served - there was water served at banquet and some tables had hot tea

(with milk and honey - yuck) but our table did not even have the hot tea

and coffee was only served after the meal. --- for the price we should

have at least received something to drink besides water with the meal.

5) rude people - there was one very rude man on a scooter - I heard

several people mention him - one night after one of the evening events

when everything was crowded anyway I watched and he almost ran over two

baby strollers trying to get ahead of everyone to get to the elevator -

yelling - " get out of the way of the cart "

one old man that worked at the hotel who told a group of LP that the

elevators were not for them - they were to use the escalators and stairs

(these were LP who were NOT on scooters)

6) elevators - awful! too slow! but packing in was a 'fun' way to say

hi to others :)

7) tour - we went on the city tour which was ok - but we did not leave

when we were scheduled and had a very long wait (about an hour) before

we got to board the bus - it caused us to miss some of the other things

we had planned for that day - everyone seemed very patient but it was

still an unreasonable amount of time to wait.

8) oh one more thing - there was no directions (none that i could find)

that told us how to get to the hotel once we got to Toronto. The

driving is horrible in downtown Toronto and we spent the better part of

the day 'touring' the city trying to find the hotel and ended up missing

one of the events we had paid for - more lost money :(

I know that sounds like lots of complaints and I don't mean to sound so

negative. Overall, the conference was great! Most people were very

nice. The hotel staff did a great job of accomodating LP. The beds

slept great. Workshops were very informative and fun. Just wish there

was more time so we could have went to more of them. Enjoyed the expo.

Saw old friends we haven't seen since 92. Met some new friends. Thanks

to everyone who made this year's convention a better experience for us.

another suggestion: it would be great if we could get a directory of

all the LP along with their email addys etc it is hard to keep up with

all those little slips of paper with names and numbers that you end up

collecting all week. could we print something like that from the

database - possibly sell them to those who are interested?

yes these were minor irritations - nothing major ----- i never said

these things were major problems ----- i do not understand your tone in

your response to me --- this time was much better than the first

convention ------ with the first for one thing we just did not know what

to expect ---- anyway i did not mean to imply that there was some huge

failure on the part of the conference committee but apparently that is

how you took it so I am sorry it sounded that way.

we are a family that struggles with finances and we do not have the

luxury of being able to lose a few dollars here and there - we tried to

plan and budget our trip to enable us to do some of the things that were

available --- the parking was the biggest issue and only for that reason

- the extra cost involved -- $50+ is a lot to us.

I think the whole purpose or intent of my post was misconstrued. Please

forgive me - it certainly was NOT intended as a flame to anyone.

LPA Members,

At the suggestion of one of the members, I brought up the idea of an LPA

Roster or directory before the Board of Directors and Executive Committee in

Toronto. They shot the idea down.

Therefore, if enough of you really want a directory, you need to contact your

District Director, and tell them to support this idea.

Why would you even say something like this.....As far as I know and I

have been a member since 1967....we have not had any problems. I

know that you may have met well but you don't have to say something

like this. This is a way that starts people to be scared....We have

to live today and hope for the future. I will be at the convention

and I know we will all have a good time.

Convention to have a blast as we say here in Kentucky. Remember to

travel in a group setting. Some would see the LPA convention as a way

to hurt, rob or God forbid murder. I'm sure those in charge have made

the right connections to insure saftey. So enjoy, and take pictures

for I can't attend this year. Again, have a blast.

Actually, and Van Etten explained to me last summer

that when LPA attained nonprofit status, it became advisable to use

the term " conference " rather than " convention " in order to emphasize

the gathering's educational mission. You'd think it wouldn't matter,

but apparently it does.
