Guest guest
Hi Barb, I f I wrote down all my problems, it would be like a book than a story, iv`e got that many problems with my spine, where do I start, 1977 when it initially started, or when I was armed attacked in 1987, then the operation on my spine in 1990, then an accident at work in 1990, then found out that the opp I had in 1995 was only half done, My specialist is unable to do anything for me, because if he did, he would have to take more or less every Disc out and try to replace them, iv`e volunteered for an opp, but was told that the Damage has spread through out my spine, Is this to long for you, I don`t know where to go for help, I am on my own here, apart from my wife, so what do I do. Barry. Re: New Member Intro, CW12. Hi Barry, This is a good group for support and advice. I think you may have misunderstood the post where the member told you that you could ask questions but please don't write a book. When I read her response I took it as if you didn't give enough information and she was saying feel free to asking questions just don't write a book. Not that what you wrote WAS too long. From reading her post that is my personal opinion on how it was written. There are times that posts on here do tend to ramble on about nothing or things that do not pertain to the group's intention. I do not think she meant for you to take it as being " told-off. Guest guest
Barry, Ouch... I am sure none of us will have an easy answer, but at least we can be here for you and be supportive. I didn't get much detailed response to my tome about my woes here too. I have found some other groups are a bit more forthcoming with sharing ideas and support for newcomers. So I am OK. At the moment I am a bit encouraged after spending some time at the gymnasium and also doing some serious attempts at weight-loss which are paying off in some reduced back pain. I still have the tingles in my neck, arm and hand though. As a side note - I am ex-UK type living in Florida now. I have been in the USA for decades. I was born in Middx., and also lived in Cambridge for a number of years. Left UK at age 16, but came back for a couple of years age 19-21 and now visit over there fairly frequently. I hope you can find some solutions to at least cope with your situation and get the best that you can out of all of this. If nothing else, some of us on here will be variously thinking about you, encouraging and befriending you. All the best - Bry From: " barry cooke. Guest guest
Hi , I went through the mill all right, as they say, bounced around from one Doctor to another, but they all said the same SORRY THERE IS NOTHING MORE WE CAN, There is a spinal hospital not far from here, I went through 5 specialist Doctors there, they all said the same bar one, he told that I had about 5 years before I end up Paralyzed from the Neck down due to amount of Damage in my neck, and that was about 10 years ago and I`m still standing, and the operation I had in January 1990, was 70% chance of Failing due to the extent of Damage in my L5 S1, as there was an Abscess next to my spinal Cord, as you know that Abscess`es are Poison in the wrong areas of the body, it`s the chemicals in them that can damage the surrounding areas, but I took that chance, as the pain I was in was sooooo bad, I had to take it, the opp was a success, for about 6 months, then the pain came back, anyway, enough of that for now, the medication I`m on now is alllllot of pain medication, I take it that you have heard of the Fentanyl Transdermal Patch, well I`m on 175mcg/hr every 48hr plus 26 other Tablets and Capsules, for pain and Nerve Pain, I did have Counseling, that was because of my Marriage break up and loosing my Job, loosing my Job was hard if anything as that was my first Love, I know it sounds Daft, but I loved work, from the age of about 10 years old, going out Potato picking, working on Farms, I was even a Delivery boy, having one of those Bikes, little wheel at the front with a crate on it, big wheel at the back, (showing my age now but I was 50 last Wednesday the 30th) that`s it for tonight, it`s 3.18am, time to go back to bed for another couple of hours. night night all Barry. Re: New Member Intro, CW12. Wow, Barry. I can see now my post with all those questions was too late. Sounds like you're in an awful situation, and I feel for you. I hope someone can help you with suggestions. All I can offer is sympathy and to say that I hope you stick around. I think you could find great comraderie here, and (sadly) have a lot of experience to share with others. Guest guest
Hi Again I forgot to mention about my work life, I work away from home for many years, and when you work away you are expected to do no less than 14 hour days, 7 days aweek, I have even done 20 hour days one week, and some of my Doctors say that doing them hours is the main culprit of my spine problems, starting at 16 years of age, I was in heavy engineering. Guest guest
Sounds like you were in the military??? Or on an oil rig??? Many jobs can have environmental work conditions / exposure that can worsen medical problems. Have you looked into that? Just a thought. Re: New Member Intro, CW12. Wow, Barry. Guest guest
Hi , I wish I was life would be a lot easier, 1st Job after leaving school I was working up in Nottingham for about 6 or 8 weeks, iv`e worked away from home for many years, and I loved it, but I started to have a lot of time off work due to my back, and I found out that my Company had Bupa, so I went through my Doctor he got me intouch with a Specialist, so when I saw him he sent me for a scan, and found out that I had a cyst next to my spinal cord, the Disc was no more, so I had the opp, but he did warn me that it was a 70% chance that I would be Paralyzed from the waist down, but the PAIN was so bad I had to take the chance, so on the 11/1/09 I had the opp, it took 2.5 hours, he put a metal frame in to hold L5 and S1 together, on the L5 he used screws to hold the frame in but the S1 was too soft for the screws so he had to use wires, the pop was a success (for a few months) but then it all started again, anyway, there is a lot more to add, I don`t want to get told off again. ta ta for now Barry. Guest guest
I gather you are in USA. Many Americans work far too hard. It is a throw back to the slavery days and employers expect it. I am not doing so badly now, but in years past I have lifted VERY heavy things at work, and done some long hours. They often say that " Hard work never killed anyone. " However, it has gven a lot of us spinal problems, or worsened our condition. Pray for healing. That can actually help sometimes. Guest guest
Hi Bry, I`m in S. E. Cheshire UK, and snowed in with about 4 inches of it, I don`t have a Trade, but I did work to work my way up the Ladder, and it was heavy work as well, you mentioned the Bike, I did 5 day`s a week, as you said with a Box in the front, the brakes wern`t very good on my bike, so I had to get half of and use my Feet on the ground, if you know what I mean, I was doing that job when I was at school, so when I finished school it was straight to the shop, it took me about 2 to 3 hours a night, then on Saturday & Sunday mornings I work on a farm, starting at 4am till about 8 or 9am, even at that age, I was working hard, I am 1 of 5, and we were brought up hard, we were taught that if you want money, you had to work for it, so I did and now I am paying for it, in more ways than I can say, anyway, enough for now, iv`e just turned 50yrs old, and the rate I am worse, as I CANNOT get better, I`m doing well for it, pain is my Enemy. Guest guest
I thought most people thought of Americans as far too lazy???? Greedy??? (which we are... but show me a country or culture which isn't...) And I do think Mr. Barry is from the UK. Hard work yes. But sometimes it is necessary to lift heavy things... which I just realised, is a silly thing to say on a " spinal group " . How many times have we all looked at something that we HAVE to lift or move???? aaaakkkk! We sure can get creative on how we can get " the job done " can't we??? Move that freakin' thing and feel good after we have done it. , and then wonder the next fifteen minutes or so, if we can unbend our bodies and make it to a chair??? BTDT. We all have to make adjustments to our lives. Pain is always there. Finding a good pain clinic is importantant. Docs... yes they are too. I have yet to find a good Doc up here in NH to help me. My old Doc retired. The last couple years I have sort of been my own Doc. (Yes I do have a family doctor). But some of the tests I have done, procedures, I have initiated on my own. So do not ever question asking for any test or anything. DO IT, or at least try. JMO. OK, I will get off my soap box... in NH Re: Re: New Member Intro, CW12. I gather you are in USA. Guest guest
Hi , I have work for many years in Heavy Engineering, making Machines for making House Bricks, from open flat land, to up and running Factories, all the Ducting, Dryers, Kiln's, Railway tracks, all heavy stuff, you have a Contract to Build it in a Certain time limit, it was hard and I loved it, and now I`m paying the price, it wasn`t all work that has caused all this pain, my body is worn out yes because of work, I also had a couple of Accidents, and I was a Victim of an Armed Assault, which caused damage to my neck, to disc 3 4 and 5, with bleeding going down my spinal cord, which is now festering, and that's causing allot of pain down my neck to my arms, fingers, also have damage to my T1, which a heavy steel bar was dropped on it, and that is causing allot of pain, another Accident to my T8 9 and 10, and more, I am in allot of Pain, I am on my own here trying to deal with it, and with the help of my wife, I`m sick of all this medication I have to take, I take 29 tabs aday plus my Fentanyl Patches, 175mcg/hr every 48 hours and others, iv`e put myself on a Volunteers`s list, with private Hospitals, plus the NHS list, and any others I can find, iv`e been turned down twice as my spine is Beyond Repair, so does anyone else have any ideas on what I can do, Help & Advise I Need as I am at my wits end on what to do. Guest guest
Hi Barb, The Pain Pump is to work in 1 area, but for me to have that I think I would need about a Dozen or more, each Joint is collapsing on each other, when I left school, I was almost 5ft 8 " tall, and now I`n about 5ft 3 " or may less, it`s been a while since I checked, I`ve seen many specialist, none of them can do anything more for me, the only time they might try something is if and when I`m unable to walk, this is the UK and the NHS will NOT do anything until its to late unless you have got money to go Private, I have had injections into my spine, which did not work but just the oppersit, the Doctor hit a nerve and maid me paralyzed for a few hours, and I will NOT have the Cortisone injections into my spine as the side effects are to great, I`ve been intouch with all the specialist in the UK I could find, and none of them will touch me, there maybe others out there that I don`t know about, and I will keep searching for them. Barry. Re: New Member Intro, CW12. Barry, I think someone may have already mentioned this to you, but has your doctor talked to you at all about a pain pump?
