Guest guest
Hi Ann, The purpose of the discogram is to try and reproduce your pain. I know someone here on Feisty said their doctor told her she should have asked for pain medication during the procedure. (Mine did not offer pain medication at all) That's why I suggested you ask Dr Rand for his philosophy on this issue. I'm sure different doctors have different ideas on this issue. The way I look at is - the worst he can do is say no! Good luck with this procedure - let us know how it goes. I'll be wishing you the best! Guest guest
Hi Corina from Vermont. My brother lives in the northeast kingdom up there. We go there often. I am in New York and it's mighty cold here now too. We are even getting some snow? I live on the Island, so we get all giddy whenever we get any snow at all. Crazy huh? People start driving all weird down here when we get a little bit of snow. I never understood why they freak out like that. : ) I mean, if they want to see what a " real " snowfall looks like they ought to visit Vermont or New Hampshire right? I heard that the windchill factor on top of MT Washington, in NH was 100 degrees below zero last night. Now THAT would hurt my poor bones, and everything else too. LOL As far as the cold bothering my bones, well to tell you the truth, when it is raining and humid here it tends to give me a harder time. The humidity makes my joints very achy. The cold does too to some extent, but nothing that a good hot bath wouldn't take care of,....albeit temporarily. But I am sure everyone here has different opinions of what sets them off into the pain spiral. But I would love to warm my bones in front of a warm and inviting fireplace, in a big old n home in Vermont.or NH. Maybe I can get a Jacuzzi in here too. Well I can dream can't I. It could happen. LOL Maybe we will be neighbors ........Carol ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Guest guest
Carol or " Irish " Saw your note to Corinna. Here in New England, we are about to break all records for the eastern part of the state. I spoke with my friend in Glenhead this a.m. and she felt snowed in! Six inches of powdery snow! Anyway, my message was meant to be that a friend of mine told me that her son and a few others are climbing Mt.Washington on Saturday no matter what the weather! One of the people is a professional climber. Even my friend is worried about her (very grown) son. Carole

Guest guest
Sharon, I know! I told the mother that " now we all can pay for their rescues, right? " I sincerely hope that will not be necessary, though. My husband used to ski with a club at Tuckerman's Ravine about a lifetime ago. Guest guest
Hi Christi, Well I can't say I had the best of dr's do mine. They told me it wouldn't hurt mmmmmmmmm well they strapped me down to a table arms, legs and head and neck, first warning they were fibbing. The first part of it for me didn't hurt much but the guy couldn't get the needle where he it and he kept moving it around in there, THAT hurt!!!!! The rest of it was no big deal injecting the dye and stuff, then the CT scan. All in all it took maybe and hour total. It says on this procedure they give you an IV of pain reliever and relaxant I wish they had given me that that would have made it alot easier. I can't say it was the easiest test I ever had and I really hope I never had another one. But compared to my back pain and nerve pain I'd say its probably close to the same on my worst days for you I can't say. One thing I will say is try and relax being tense will make it tougher on you so do anything you can to relax while you are there. Best of luck with your test. Guest guest
Hi Christi, I am so sorry that you are having this most inhumane of tests. The whole point of the test is to reproduce the pain. They scheduled mine at a time when I was having confusing symptoms. I had left leg pain but my hernitions went to the right. I knew that it was necessary to do this test to better understand what was going on inside my back. I could not have any pain medication prior to. And the worst part was when they were having to insert and situate the first needle. It was an intense pressure pain. That is the best I know to explain it. Once that was accomplished it was a breeze in comparison. I handled the injection of dye ok and when it reproduced my pain it was that that I was already experiencing on a day to day basis. When they were putting in the first needle they said they must of hit a nerve because it also sent the worst pain down my leg. Boy those nerves are very delicate. After words they imediately gave me an injection of pain medication and kept me for a bit to monitor me. On a happier note I know that it is not done the same everywhere. My Mom lives a few states away and told me about her neighbor having it. He did not go thru the pain that I did. I think she called it a twilight sleep or somthing similar. So they must have given him something. Get on the phone today and call the Doc up and ask all the detailed questions that you need to. Ask if you can have anything prior too. Even a valium can make a big difference. Relax as much as you can. Tensing up will only makes it worse. I was told or read somewhere along the way that a discogram was necessary in order to have the ADR. I would had to have had it not only for the first surgeon to figure out what was going on, but so that my 3rd surgeon could do my ADR. I say all this only to point out that there is a purpose in having this test. As awful as it may be it was needed for me. Sorry to ramble so much I hope that something I have said is of help. If you have any other questions fire away. Take care and keep me posted. Katrina > Ok, I looked through the arcives and see that the discogram really > sucks. I am having one on Monday. Guest guest
Wow, well thats about what I thought. My surgeon said that in a round about way I guess but he was rushed that day (makes me angry) and so he litterally ran off bf I could ask any questions. It wasnt till I researched the web that I found out about it causing pain on purpose.....thanks for the reply!! Guest guest
Hi Christi and Katrina well here is my 2 cents about the discogram. I had it done and didnt feel anything but the normal pain i have gone thru I did however get something to relax me but was very awake the doc who did the procedure was awsome my mother in law had it done and she however was in alot of pain and so was a friend of mine. Mine was simple it was painful but nothing i havent felt thru the years of back pain i had been dealing with. either i have a VERY high tolerance (which they say i do) or I was a fortunate one. I recieved pain meds right afterwards to and was sore for about 24 hours but nothing that i couldnt tolerate. my friend on the other hand was in bed for a few days. it was a very necesary procedure because that is how they found out that the disc was ruptured and shattered and i was not holding fluid in the sac. Best of luck to you during this procedure and I hope and pray you dont have to deal with excrutiating pain Sincerely JanineChristi <christimoczygemba@...> wrote: Wow, well thats about what I thought. Guest guest
not exactly sure what a discogram is, but i did have that same area fused in august. is it a surgery or a test of some sort? oh i just looked it up. go to spine-health.com it sounds as if it could be painful, but definately soreness afterwards. they said you should/could ask for pain meds (not ibuprofen) afterwards. check it out; it seems informative. good luck rob >From: " le " <daniellebrauer@...> >Reply-neck pain >neck pain >Subject: Discogram >Date: Fri, 12 May 2006 15:55:53 -0000 > >I'm having a discogram done from L3 down to S1 this coming Tuesday. >Has anyone had this done? Guest guest
HI le they inject dye into the disk to see what they look like. They also can do a CT scan afterwards to get a look at them too. I had mine done in a hospital the second time. They gave me a valium to relax me as I was nervous too. The first one I had done was not much fun. Anyway with the valium to help it was a breeze and I barely felt a thing they were so good there. Ask your dr ahead of time to give you a script for one and they should do it. Just be sure and tell your dr who is ordering the test you are nervous about it. Relaxing during the test is very important as when you are nervous you tense up and as with most things that will make it hurt. Good luck I hope all goes well for you. Guest guest
HI le, I had a Discogram done in the same area in Sept. 04. It was a terrible experience for me. But I have heard of other people that have not had that bad of a time with it. A couple states away my mom told me about her neighbor who had the same thing and not nearly the trouble I did. He was in a twighlight sleep I think she called it. I was awake and with out my pain pills for the entire procedure. The worst part was when that were situating the first needle and when the 'bumped' a nerve as they called it. I question the neccesity of this test now after the matter. I have talked to docs who think it isn't that neccessary. I talked to a Doc who was doing my myleogram about it. Also when I went to see other docs for more opinions they would generally look at the MRI and not bother with the Discogram. This is just my one experience and thoughts. There are others who have had an easier time of it. But I would definately discuss the need in great detail with the Doc before hand. I would never have this test done on me again! Not meant to scare. HTH Take care, Katrina Group Moderator > > I'm having a discogram done from L3 down to S1 this coming Tuesday. > Has anyone had this done? How bad was it? Guest guest
Hi Jeff, sorry to hear that. That really stinks. My doctor wants me to have a discogram. I haven't even recovered from the nerve block that afterwards made my pain 10x worse plus added pain where there wasn't and is still there but not as bad as the first week. What does 4 level lumbar mean? Are you having surgery? Was the discogram useful to diagnose? Thanks, Barbara jirvin63 <jeff_irvin@...> wrote: I had a 4 level lumbar discogram done on January the 26th, I am still in a considerable amount more pain than before the test. There seems to be a smaller, different pain than before, the same old grind is a lot worse, the muscle spasms have increased a lot too. I havent had any nerve root injections for going on 3 months, my previous schedule was every 2 months. Could this be caused by the dye, or the pressure in the discs? Doc was into a larger nerve in my r leg 2 or 3 times inserting, thats happened before during injections, not ussually a real bad thing once he moves the needle. I see my surgeon the 20th of this month, I can wait and ask him, but curious if anyone else has ever had this problem. thanks Jeff
