Oxycontin is far more potent in strength than morphine but it is similar to morphine. >> Not sure who wrote the above, but respectfully, they have given incorrect information. I have taken all of these medications. Oxycontin, which is a timed released medication, is not similar to Morphine. I have taken Oxycontin (more similar to Vicodin not Codeine). I have also taken M.S. Contin (which perhaps the writer is confusing Oxycontin with) which also is a time released medication and also is a Morphine derivitive. For the best information, check with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have an allergy or concern to a specific medication. While I think this group is a wonderul source of sharing both information and our experiences and I'm always grateful, I think it is important to note that people do make mistakes in here (including me). People's opinions are valuable and treasured! But we should also ALWAYS check with our pharmacists and doctors in the final analysis. I, too, have been taking pain meds (through pain managment programs) for the better part of 10 years. Just to name a few: From non narcotics like Ultram, and Toredol to Vicodin (and it's relatives, Lortabs, Norco) to Hydromorphone (also called Diluaded, I believe) to Oxycontin (TIme released Hydrocodone without Tylenol), M.S. Contin (Time released Morphine), Tylenol and Codeine, Flexeril, Skelaxin, Xanaflex (great non-narcotic muscle relaxant---but hard on liver sometimes), Doxpin, Neurontin, Topamax, Naprosyn, Vioxx, Celebrex, and a host of other joyous, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, special pain med blends, injections etc. My point is, that I, too, have a bit of a working knowledge of a few of these as well. I am not above making a mistake, but I do know about those that I've taken. Again, however, if someone has a question or a concern, they should call their doctor or pharmacist. If someone has a question about a side effect they're having and want to know if it's something I experienced I'd be more than happy to share my experience as that's all I'm really qualified to do. Didn't mean to come off as a " know it all " or get involved in a " pissing match " either. When I re-read what I wrote (my response) it came out a bit different from what I had intended. Somewhere along the line I read that someone said that they (Hydrocodone and Codeine) were the " same " medication which I knew they weren't. Or at least, I'm ok. People need to voice their opinions and sometimes they disagree. I think is the bomb!!! (That was a compliment lol). But I do think you should check with your pharmacist. I was originally (back in '94 or '95 when I was put on Oxycontin) put on it cuz I tolerated Vicodin so well but it only worked for 1 1/2 hrs for me so my pain mgmt. doctor suggested the Oxycontin and told me it was the same stuff but time released and without the Tylenol. I COULD BE MISTAKEN THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! I have found that Codeine works best for me. I now take Tylenol and Codeine #4 (which, when it works, works for 4-5 hours). I had started developing a tolerance. My new (and brilliant) pain mgmt doctor has added a special compound with it along with some other stuff. Some of these doctors are pretty smart guys. So KEEP ASKING IF SOMETHING DOESN " T WORK. Make them pay attention or get another doctor. xoxooxxo Robin

Do you go to those guys in addition to your reg Dr's? >> Yeah, kinda. My pain mgmt. doc does all the prescribing of pain meds. My new guy is great but I've also had terrible ones too. Like all docs, some are great and brilliant and others are awful. You just have to find the right one. I know exactly what you mean about the " accepting " part. I just view it as dealing with this guy until the problem is fixed though. In fact the pain group I'm now associated with mostly see people for 6 months or so (I'm a rare case for them). Most of my other Pain Mgmt. docs see their patients for years. Some people see their Pain guys for the rest of their lives and some only until the problem arrests or is taken care of until surgery. Just look at it as a temporary thing. Robin
