Guest guest
Have seen others who mention hardware removal... Question...why do they remove the hardware, and what do they do to replace it? alabama64me <davids_girl64@...> wrote: I have a long story but just wanted to give a short history. Guest guest
Vivian, the reason I am getting my hardware removed is because it's causing alot of pain on my right sacrum, hip area. It's a pinching, burning sensation, not like a pinched nerve, different, but uncomfortable nontheless, I believe it's pressing on nerves in that area. I have alot of weakness in that area, and am hoping the hardware removal takes care of alot of those issues I have. Blossom > > I have a long story but just wanted to give a short history. Guest guest
Interesting...then what happens to the area after the hardware is removed? Is it fused enough to hold its own? alabama64me <davids_girl64@...> wrote: Vivian, the reason I am getting my hardware removed is because it's causing alot of pain on my right sacrum, hip area. Guest guest
I fused slowly, it took 1 1/2 yrs. If I wasn't fused they wouldn't take the hardware out. If I could go back, I don't think I would have gotten fused, it's a long painful road. Of course I was getting bad nerve damage, so I didn't have a choice. I am numb on my hips, legs, & places on my back. I have bad muscle spasms still, and it feels like I have no butt or low back muscles still. It's a slow painful process to heal. I doubt I will ever be able to do the things I used to like hike, golf, ski etc. I feel like a cripple most days. I know a bunch of people who have had this surgery (I have my own back pain board), and only two people out of maybe a 100 I have met immediately got relief and resumed their lives to the fullest. Guest guest
Blossom, I can fully relate to your painful herniation(s) at T5-6, T7-8, and the DDD. I also suffer from a large central disc extrusion at T6-7 and protrusions at T-8, 9, ,10, 11 all coupled with moderate DDD. I also have a bulged disc at L5-S1 contacting the nerve root and severe arthritis at S1 facet joints. My spinal cord is compressed 6mm at T6-7. I suffer from discogenic pain, radiculopahty wrapping around my left ribs, and general severe aching all over. Torso movement of any type, especially rotational, causes extreme sharp piercing pain in the local area and any movement of my hips causes severe in my lower back area radiating into groin area and legs. I am not a good candidate for surgery because surgery via thoractomy, diskectomy, and fusion do a very poor job of improving axial pain. In fact, I have been told that it would likely cause more pain and given the difficulty of controlling my current pain levels, this is not an option. There is also a good chance of paralysis. I don't want to make the decision that could worsen things for me so I would rather wait, and so would my doctor, until surgery is warranted from either worsening conditions or an accident. Meanwhile, I am on a pain treatment regime until such time occurs. I was medically disqualified from my place of employment in Dec 2004 and have been collecting LTD since that time. At the time of my medical disqualification, I had just been seen by an Independent Medical Examiner who concluded that the imposed work restrictions (15 hrs/week) were acceptable and it was unlikely that I would get better in the long run. I am also awaiting my SSD trial on 9/27/05. I am only 40 yrs old so my age is against me. I do have 3 doctors that say I am disabled and unemployable so this is favorable. They would have a hard time disputing what 3 doctors say with one of their own. The medication I am on alone is enough to disqualify me from working. I no longer drive because of the side effects and I have been told as much by my lawyers. In fact, it was said I had no business being on the road. I take 2400 mg Neurontin, (2) 100 microgram/hr Fentanyl patch, 100 mg of Oxycontin, 60 mg Oxycodone, 8 mg Zanaflex, 30 mg Cymbalta, and 400 mg Provigil. My balance is terrible, memory is terrible, and the pain is still way out of control. There are numerous other side effects that are to many to listed. Again, I can relate to what you are going through. I have a great family to have been instrumental to date in dealing with all that is going on. My personal savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, has allowed be the ability to deal with the pain on a daily basis and the gift of forgetting how bad it was the day before. My church family is always there for me both in person and prayer. You definitely need someone support to help get you through this situation. This forum has lots of caring supportive individuals who sympathize and care for everyone who are members. They also provide much needed support and advice for dealing with back pain. Most suffer from lumbar disc problems and there are a few thoracic disc people on this site but not many. ThoracicPark on is a great support group for people with thoracic disc issues. They too are supportive and caring. Good luck and God Bless, Hello everyone, I'm new here I'm a veteran of back pain, having been hit by two drunk drivers, the first when I was 18 which resulted in a major herniation of L4-5, I had a laminectomy in 1992 which didn't last long, I reherniated it, and was fused March 2005. I have herniated discs at T7-8 (which is very painful), and C5-6, T5-6, and DDD everywhere else. The second accident was 7 yrs ago, it tore my rotator cuff, I have a head injury (memory mostly damaged), my right knee is giving me problems now too. I have a long story but just wanted to give a short history. I go for hardware removal at L4-5 in Nov. Looking to connect with others who understand. Guest guest
I have had a L 5/6 fusion which has helped and I do lead an active life, but it is a different active...less physical. And I still have pain and side effects, but it is easier managed with the anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxer meds now, whereas before, it wasn't managed and I was on narcotics. I still have some spasms, but it is my fault...my body's way of saying I am doing to much. alabama64me <davids_girl64@...> wrote: I know a bunch of people who have had this surgery (I have my own back pain board), and only two people out of maybe a 100 I have met immediately got relief and resumed their lives to the fullest. Guest guest
I would suggest you use your search engine and look up these drugs and also see what others have to say. Nuerotin is for the nerves. I had tried lyrica which was made as an improvement to nuerotin, I couldn't tolerate it. Hope you have better luck. I wouldn't mess around with anti- iniflammatories if you do. You might want to get this checked out with your doctor. When I had back problems 3 years ago I was put on fairly heavy doses of these and within a year I had full blown kidney problems, unable to get rid of protein and filter the toxins out of my urine. It was reversed with blood pressure meds that reduced the pressure in my kidneys and with stopping the anti inflammatories (which has been a major pain because I have some mild arthritis and they sure did help that). You should get this checked just to make sure it's not related to a kidney problem. Nurontin is not an anti-inflammatory, it is actually an anti-seizure med, but has the added benefit of helping with nerve pain. It has not helped me, but lots of people benefit from it. You need to let it build up in your system over time I believe. Dana
Guest guest
thanks for your supportive message. I believe in Jesus also, and my faith is " the only thing getting me through this horrific pain " . I also am a member of thoracic park, they are great over there. Thoracic herniations are a difficult animal, and we are such rare people in the spine disorder world, only 1% of all herniations are thoracic. It's miserable to sit, it hurts to breathe, it's just icky all around. I don't have a large support group and because I am so home-bound I do suffer from depression alot. People just don't understand, and their opinion is mostly why doesn't she get a job? I wish I could, and I wish it was that easy. Feel free to add to me your contact list on messenger if you want. My nickname is alabama64me. Guest guest
Hmmm, I replied to this message this morning, and it never showed up? Thanks for your support , thoracic herniation is a difficult thing to deal with affecting our breathing, sitting upright, driving, everything. It gets too me so much some days I can't tell you how bad. I'm taking Talwin nx for pain 4x day, soma (muscle relaxer) 3x day, midrin (for migraines) 2x day, seroquel, lunesta & elavil to sleep, and Aciphex for gastritis. I've taken neurontin & lyrica, neither did much for nerve pain, just made me feel bloated and gain weight. I reckon over 24 yrs I've taken about everything there is. Oxy & morphine patches made me sick as a dog, and I had to quit taking them. Luckily I am in pain management now, and my dr. is wonderful. I do have my faith in the lord, it is the only thing that keeps me going, believe me. I suffer from bouts of depression over my spine and health. I feel like a shut-in most days. Luckily I have a very supportive husband. Guest guest
Blossom, I would like to first apologize for not replying to this email earlier but it got lost in another file as a result of being automatically filed as potential " spam " . This one automatic feature is nice but it has caused its share of problems. I am very sorry to hear that you don't a large support group that you can draw from. It is hard for people to understand what's going on with our particular condition. The one willing enough to sit and hear you explain everything become genuinely concerned and supportive. There are many people, even some belonging to church who simply go through the motion and are superficial at best. It really has been a life changing event for me. Going from wide open, hard working, weight lifting individual to just the opposite over a 2 year period of time has been tough. I am just happy that I had opted for the max LTD available at the time is I still have some money coming in each month. Feel free to write me anytime you need to talk or vent. My email address is Biddolf@.... I do us AOL instant messenger using Biddolf for my screen name. I think just about all messenger service work together. If for some reason you cant use the AOL instant messenger (AIM) it is a free installation or I can see if I have the one you use installed somewhere on my computer. You mentioned depression. One medication I started taking that was approved for neuropathy in diabetics is called Cymbalta. It works pretty well on the pain and also helps minimize/prevent depression. It does have side effects that cause some people not to take it but just like anything else, you don't know till you try. My last appointment with my pain doc was disheartening because he said that my dose of narcotics is getting to the point where we need to be careful about opiod hyper-analgesia (a condition where the narcotics actually cause you to be hypersensitive to pain). In other word it makes you hurt worse and just not in the area where you pain originated, it starts to hurt everywhere. This was the last thing I wanted to hear because I haven't had relief from pain in almost 8 months now. I've been averaging 7/10. I started playing around with my other meds after getting permission to do so and hopefully I will find a winning combination. Neurontin seems to be the one that has the biggest effect and I am already taking 2400 mg/day. I just increased it to 3200 mg/day and am cautiously optimistic. Lastly, I am VERY HAPPY to hear you have a supportive husband. I couldn't do it without my wife. We are still adapting to everything since I am only two years into this thoracic thing. I read about so many people who don't have a supportive spouse and my heart goes out to them. Well going to close for now as I am drifting off because of meds taken. If there is anything I can do, let me know. The weather has finally turned nice in central Va so I am going out to sit on the porch and have some coffee and wait for the family to wake .. Take care and God Bless, Hello everyone, I'm new here > > I'm a veteran of back pain, having been hit by two drunk drivers, the > first when I was 18 which resulted in a major herniation of L4-5, I had > a laminectomy in 1992 which didn't last long, I reherniated it, and was > fused March 2005. Guest guest
, I lived in VA for a year in 1999. Orange, outside Charlottesville. My husband was from there, but when we moved to Colorado a year later he was killed in the accident that hurt me. It was caused by a drunk driver. Luckily I survived, although some days it doesn't feel that way! I am on messenger, although I do have AOL on my other computer. I'm usually on messenger though, my name on there is alabama64me. I tried the neurotonin, it didn't do much for me, neither did the lyrica, other than make me gain weight. I understand about the pain meds situation. I try to bear though the worst pain and not take my 4th dose of Talwin everyday, but it's hard sometimes when your in total agony. I do have a back pain support board that is just getting going, although it's been around a year. It's www.backpainsupport.com if you care to come over there and visit also. There are some nice folks there. My hubby left today for Europe for two weeks with the Air Guard, he is full-time and they have alot of trips this year, so it's going to be a lonely two weeks for me, and I will have plenty of time to chat. I look forward to talking to you more about thoracic issues. There are some T-spine folks on my board also. We all seem to bond because of our special circumstances. Talk to you soon, Hugs, & God Bless you, Blossom > > > > > > Blossom, > > > I can fully relate to your painful herniation(s) at T5-6, T7-8, and > > the DDD. > > > I also suffer from a large central disc extrusion at T6-7 and > > protrusions at > > > T-8, 9, ,10, 11 all coupled with moderate DDD.
