Give it time, the swelling from the first injury plus the surgery, give it a few

weeks, yes weeks or even a month. The body takes time to heal, and we are all

different.

Hang in there.

I had surgery Aug 8, my second. The Dr. said it will be 7 more months to know if

it worked or not. If it did, then I have to have another operation. My spine

was to unstable to do the two dis at the same time.

One day at a time.

Just Had Surgery

I had surgery a few days ago for a herniated disc that was pushing on my sciatic

nerve causing terrible pain down my left leg. I have a few friends who have had

this surgery who had immediate relief. I still hurt A LOT down my left leg. I am

so afraid that the surgery did not do me any good. Has anyone gotten good

results, but had it take a few weeks?

Thanks,

Rick

You have just had surgery a few days ago, so a lot of trauma went on, which

means swelling and inflammation. All of that takes time to heal and recover

from.

Give it some time, rest, and force yourself to take it easy. If you push

things and over-do it, it will lengthen your recovery time as well as make

things worse.

The MRI revealed left paracntral disc protrusion at L5-S1 compromising the left

S1 nerve root. I believe the procedure is called a Laminectomy. In terms that I

understand, they cut away the portion of the disc that was compromising the

nerve root.

I'm sorry, I'm not rying to offend anyone. But it's not numbness, it's one of

the most painful stabbing sensation that I can imagine. I'm not frustrated, I'm

live with this.

I understand Rick the stabbing pain I don't have in my legs thankfully that is

only in my thoratic region. It goes from one side to the other I try to push

myself against anything till it subsides. It goes from between my breasts to my

back and I pray for it to stop. It of course isn't a heart attack but it might

as well be if thats the kind of pain I am to endure. Yes Rick I understand I am

51 and went through three major operations and they aren't up to the thoratic

area yet. I am 5'10 1/2 " and know exactly what you are talking about. Other

pains I have are due to a complete idiot operating on something he had no idea

how to handle. Arnold Chiari I and botched me up more than I had before the

operation giving me hypersensitive arms and loss of feeling in my legs. Of

course Aetna was more than happy to have this man do the operation because he

was cheaper than the Chiari Institute who knew you don't mess around with rare

diseases that way. Do I hate Aetna hell yeah. Does

Dr. O'Rourke ever even touch my dog hell no thank you University of Pa.

Hugs

Don't want to discourage you but don't be surprised if this lasts months. I had

laminectomy same location. Dr said bone spur was kinking the nerve, which I

guess he did not know going in, and that it could take the nerve up to a year to

heal. I am almost 5 months from surgery now and still have the pain, more than

before surgery, also numb leg and most of foot (they said this is last to go).

I have to take Darvocet and Lyrica all the time, can't take anything stronger.

When I asked if some people never heal, they said " only 5% " - didn't make me

feel any better. I have to use cane which causes me to lean and now the L3-L4

is giving me fits. I hope you do better.

I hate the " 5% " thing too. I had RK done on my eyes to get me out of glasses.

They told me that 95% of people get out of glasses, I'm still wearing glasses.

When I was married to my ex-wife, after our second child was twins, she had her

tubes tied. (98.5% success rate) My forth child is now 18 years old. But I do

still have hope. I know the Dr. had to physically move the nerve during the

procedure. He told me it could cause trauma. However, the day after the

procedure, he asked how I was doing. When I told him the pain was still in my

leg, I could see the disappointment on his face.

Thanks,

Rick

I had a microdiskectomy on June 27. It took me quite a while to

feel better, and that was with a dose of steroids and regular doses

of ibuprofen to lessen the inflamation, in addition to physical

therapy. I think I have reherniated again, and I go to the

neurosurgeon tomorrow. Hopefully I can just go for the disk

replacement.

Rick--a bit of advice: DON'T try to do too much. Don't push it at

all and give yourself a long time to recover. Listen to your

doctors and if you think you should not do something, don't do it.

Especially with kids, it is hard to sit back and miss out on things,

but you need to! Before I re-herniated my disk, the intense

stabbing pain had significantly lessened, but I still had to take

painkiller on a regular basis. Don't get discouraged so soon, even

though it is really frustrating. If it makes you feel any better, I

am a 29 year old mom who can't stand (because of the stabbing) or

even get out of bed without meds at this point. I keep telling my

doctor that I could deal with the numbness-it is the stabbing that

hits with no warning that is problematic for me.

And a good morning to all. This is the most pain-free that I've been in over a

month! I still hurt, but this is VERY encouraging. I appreciate everyones words

of encouragement.

Hi Rick and Hello Everyone. I'm in NC. I had the same surgery

that you did on Sept. 28. I still have quite a bit of swelling

despite a 5 day regimen of prednisone. My doctor started me on Lyrica

at my last visit. It has helped a lot with the sciatica but the pain

in my leg is still there, just not as intense. I'm having pain in my

hip and knee also which makes walking very tricky. I'm hoping that

with a bit more healing time the pain will improve. But my doctor

told me that if the lyrica didn't work, he would do more tests to see

if we could find the cause of the pain.

Good luck to you and don't get discouraged. Time will help.

Just wanted to say " welcome " to the group.  I pray that your healing process goes well and that your dizziness and balance issues get better also.  The ringing problem will get better as your ear heals up, I know it can be quite unnerving (and noisy!) at first.

Hi there everyone. I'm Ben, 30, from UK. I've just (13/05/2009) had surgery at St. Bart's hospital in London to remove extensive cholesteatoma which had affected the left ear drum, attic, eroded the incus and the malleus, and began to erode the lateral semi-circular canal. Boy was I dizzy when I came round! Very unsettling. As I was in such a state when the registrar came to see me in the morning, I'm not entirely sure what procedure has been carried out, I'll have to wait 3 weeks until I return to have the packing removed. I know a tympanoplasty has been done, and I think the canal wall has been reconstructed as well. The external auditory meatus has not been enlarged. Is this consistent with a modified radical mastoidectomy? Do they rebuild the canal wall always with a MRM? Because of the extent of the disease I was expecting the surgeon to do a CWD procedure, and I presume, because the disease had eroded part of the lateral semi-circular canal, that the canal wall was already at least partially eroded (this may be a misunderstanding of exactly what the canal wall is on my part, I presume it to be the bony wall separating the semi-circular canals labyrinth from the middle ear)? I trust my surgeon very much and I'm sure he had very good reasons for doing what he has done, it's just frustrating not to know exactly what that was yet!

Any info/advice/personal stories etc gratefully received. My balance seems to be coming back gradually, it's only been four days now, so that's good. They did say that they thought the hearing had been lost in the ear, and it hasn't so that's good too. I do have quite loud ringing in the ear, has anyone else had this? Might it too subside?

Look forward to hearing from someone, and also to answering any questions anyone else may haveBest RegardsBen
