Hi Kris, if you´ve read my 2 mails you´ll know I had this done in Mai. After

the op I spent 24 hours on ICU and was then sent to a normal ward. No tubes

up the nose but did have tubes into the wounds (Drainage) but they´re not

too bad more uncomfortable than anything else.

I had complications due to an allergie and had to be transfered to the

University hospital but was sent back after 2 weeks to the neurosurgical

unit where there were people who´s had the same as me who were doing

fantastic after only 10 days but they´d been on there feet for 6 days by

then (I wasn´t allowed up for almost 4 weeks) met one since I´ve been out

and she´s doing great (envy :-))) if the op goes ok you should be fine and

as for waking up you´re normally so doped that you don´t care anyway :-))))

Different Hospitals have different ways of treating, mine wouldn´t give us

anything to eat or drink post op until we´d been to the loo, (in my case 4

days!) another here in Kiel (Germany) gives you a drink almost the minute

you wake up, depends on where you are I suppose.

i can though honestly say that my first OP was the best thing I ever did,

the relief after years of pain was fantastic!!! Good Luck, you´ll be OK I´m

Hi Everyone,

I Need Your Help! I fell down the stairs at work and tore a disk in

my lower back. I've been to 9 different doctors (1 of which, the

workers comp doctor, said there's nothing wrong with me and sent me

back to work which did more damage and they quit paying me

disability!) anyway, after the other 8 doctors that I've been to,

they say I need a Posterior Lumbar Spinal Fusion. Finally after 10

months (I fell Nov. 2002) I got approval for the surgery from the

workers comp insurance company and will have it done this coming

Friday. I suffer from depression and have panic/anxiety attacks for

the past 10 years. I take medication for both. I've been on and off

of vicodin for pain which pretty much just knocks me out and I feel

pretty good.....well good enough to sleep all day! but the pain is

still there.....my mind just doesn't care because I'm so knocked out!

I'm getting nervous about the surgery, but have a WONDERFUL support

system. My boyfriend, whom I live with, will be coming with me and

my Mom and Dad will be there also. My boyfriend's parents live

right across the street from us and his Mom is as sweet as can be

and will gladly help me out when I get home from the hospital, which

I think is wonderful and I'm very blessed to have her.

I'm scared and anxious because I don't know what to expect. I'm the

kind of person that needs to know what will be happening when I wake

up or I'm afraid I'll panic. I've been doing alot of surfing from

my laptop here in bed and have read about an NG tube in the nose to

extract stomach fluids, tubes in your back to extract fluids from

the spinal area, etc. This kind of frightens me. Even though I

have a good family/friend support group around my home area, I'm

looking for an " online family " that can offer support and help. I'm

going to post updates as I recover, but need your advice and help in

preparing this week for my surgery.

president of the company and worked on a computer all day doing

marketing things, budget, etc., and I simply could not sit for 8

hours a day without pain. Needless to say, I lost my insurance

since they terminated me and am having to pay $300 a month for COBRA

insurance. Thank GOD I have a wonderful Attorney! He said to just

hang in there and I'll be ok in the end....I'm not worried about

money (too much) right now. I just want my back fixed! I'm so

tired of hurting all the time. I've lost almost a year of my life.

Friends help me get groceries, mow my yard (just sold my house after

I moved in with so mowing's over!) I feel like a burden

sometimes because everyone has to do things for me.

Please email me if you can offer any advice and help regarding a

posterior spinal fusion (L4/5 S1).

Looking forward to my recovery, but nervous about Friday's surgery.

PLEASE HELP ME! I'm worried about my depression also. I've been so

much worse this year since I mostly sleep or lay in bed all day and

don't see people too much. I worry that I'll be discouraged at

first and don't know how to handle that.

Hey Kris!

It is okay to be scared. I was also when I had my L4/5 fusion this past May,

even though I had done the research and made a pest of myself on the lists

asking so many questions. But that is why we are here...to support and encourage

each other. I also slipped on some stairs at work, and WC terminiated my

beneifits when they got a doctor to say there was nothing wrong. Currently in

litigation and unable to settle until recovery has been accomplished as much as

it will.

Are you still getting workers comp benefits? That wasn't clear to me because you

said your disability was stopped, yet WC approved the surgery. What do you have

your attorney for? Workers comp or wrongful termination of your job? WC can take

several years to settle with you.

Glad that you have such a good support system with the boyfriend and 2 sets of

parents.

When I had my fusion, I didn't have a nose tube, but did have the drain in my

back. The drain didn't bother me and was just a pinch feeling when they removed

it.

The hosp keeps you in pain meds so don't worry about that. They will want you to

be walking within 24 hrs, painful but you can do it.

Will you be wearing a brace afterwards? I had one for 3 months. What a pain in

the butt but felt better with it on. Some doc's will order a brace and others

won't.

Just remember...you are having major surgery. Take it easy and don't push

yourself. Take the time you need to recover. Most recoveries are delayed because

we tend to do more and push ourselves. It can take up to 12 months to recover

from this surgery, and there is a chance it won't work.

Thanks so much Ann! I'm feeling so much better reading everyone's

posts/emails and knowing that I'm not alone! I've been reading

stories online and have gotten pretty scared and I think I needed to

hear from and interact with actual people that have had a spinal

fusion. The internet can be a wonderful thing, but all the research

I've done and the different ways hospitals/physician's do things has

been scaring me. You guys are really calming me down.

Hope all is well for you and that you continue to heal and be well.

I'll be posting updates when I get home. I've got my laptop set up

here in the bedroom....ordered a hospital like rolling table so I

can keep in touch with everyone while in bed.

The pain I was in while resting is gone, but still have to take it easy when

being active. Also have more sciatic pain on left side that goes from my left

buttock down to my knee.

I can cook and do light housekeeping, but is hard to get things in the lower

cabinets or if I drop something on the floor. Walking around house is okay, but

not for exercise or even shopping...that is when the sciatic pain is worse, and

sometimes makes my leg buckle.

But is has only been 4 mo since my surgery and it can take a year to recover.

I was in a TLSO brace for 3 months, and was fitted in hospital after my surgery.

Fitting it then wasn't bad as I was still hooked up to the morphine pump.

I am also a wc case, and have a lawyer as benefits were terminated after they

got a doctor to say there was nothing wrong with me. And that was after several

x-rays and CT's that showed a different story. My career is over and my pain and

suffering has been extended thanks to wc. My lawyer also says I will be taken

care of in the end...it just might take a couple years to settle. Thank goodness

my husband is working and brings home a paycheck. Not enough money for fancy

things but we do get by okay. And since he is in the military, my medical care

is taken care of. When he retires next year, it will be harder as his retirement

check will be about half of what he is bringing in now, and then we will have

co-pays for our medical care.

I have also gotten a lawyer to help me receive disability.

I wish these people who make the decisions on our lives and finances could live

for a day in our bodies and let them feel our difficulty and pain. Maybe then

they wouldn't make it so hard for us.

Hi Vivian!

4 days!!! I can´t believe it!! here you´re in for minimum of 13 days and

I was in over a month, believe it has something to so with Insurance over

there (friend in NJ told me) being paid a fixed sum per OP which means they

get the same whether your in for 4 or 40 days, how on earth did you manage

when you got home??? Here your Physiotherapy plan is started in hospital,

home help organised, GP informed, the lot before you go home. I couldn´t

even shower alone after 4 weeks let alone dry myself (I know that has lots

to do with the allergie stuff) and my GP complained they had sent me home

much to early.

I just can´t imagine anyone going home so early after this OP. Could it be

because you got a corset? The hospital I was in don´t use them anymore as

they say it´s better to lay flat for 4 days and then start moving without a

corset to get the muscles going again?? I do know of a Hospital in South

Germany who still use corsets and their patients are up the same day or

latest the day after.

I just hope they keep me as long as I need to, to get up and around

by myself, etc. When I come home, my Boyfriend works all day and I

won't have someone here 24/7. I can't imagine coming home 4 days

after, but I guess whatever they say is what I'll do. I have a good

support system, but they won't be here all the time.

That is the average stay for my surgery here. And I am glad that when I came

home, I had my husband to help me, but he went back to work after that first

weekend.

Depends on the doctor whether he decides on a brace or not.

I was talking to my therapist and she told me of her friend who had back

surgery...was not allowed to sit up, only to lay in bed for 6 weeks. After the 6

weeks, she was up and with no pain. Said laying down for that long made for good

healing.

It will be fine. They will have you walking in the hospital, so after you get

home, you will be able to walk to the bathroom or to get something to eat or

drink. Just take some time at home to rest and relax, watch Jerry Springer or

Lifetime on TV, and keep some food around that you can eat without cooking

(unless it is in a microwave).

Kris,

best of luck with your operation! I had a one level c3-c4 spinal

fusion last wed, sept 17. My surgery has been fine. But I have

attacks about breaking my fusion when I should not. I am very mad

at myself post op for doing this surgery. My pain was constant but

moderate. I could work fine and jog every day for 4-6 miles a day.

Although, I cannot compete anymore. I lost all my above shoulder

strength. I can bench press servera hundred pounds but can change a

light bulb above my head.

I have been very discourged about my condition and decided to go for

surgery to get back to near 100%. Even after a week, I have no pain

and I only take a pain pill at night to help me sleep because I

constantly worry about my condition. You sound like you worry alot

too and I understand completly. My wife is a gread help in focusing

me. Use your suuport people to constantly cheer you on. Live day

by day and do EVERYTHING you are supposed to until the day you get

the all clear from the doctor.

Thanks, Chris.

Yes I am a worrier, but I'm starting to realize that things will be

what they will be and we can't just worry ourselves to death.

Good luck with your progress and keep us all posted. A support

system is a MUST, whether it be online or family/friends at home.

Glad you have your wife to keep you focused and help you. My

boyfriend has been and I'm sure will continue to be a wonderful help.
