Guest guest
My first set of injections 4 years ago did nothing for me...then I had back surgery. My back got worse with failed back syndrome and 2 more bulging discs, so another set of shots. First one worked for a day, second worked for a week, and the 3rd one was 2 months ago and still working. I am never completely back pain free, but it did wonders for the sciatic pain. No adverse reactions from any injections. The reason I am asking is because I had 1 epidural, and had no benefit at all from it. I had no side effects from it either. However, the doctor wants me to try 2 more injections just in case they help. However, I am not sure that I want to take a chance with any more since the 1st one did'nt work. I am scared of getting the possible adverse reactions. Tristan --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. Guest guest
thanks Vivian. maybe there is hope for me then that the 2nd one will work even though the 1st did'nt do much. I had back surgery about 8 years ago. It took away the leg pain, but back pain has persisted since then. Guest guest
I had two ESIs, no improvement after either one. I also had two medial branch blocks, no improvement after the first, but prolonged (maybe permanent, but I'm not sure... it's " only " been two months) pain after the second one (from a doctor who claims this is his " specialty " ). Everyone's body is different though, so YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). Good luck, whatever you decide! Guest guest
Hello: I had 1 ESI in the Lubar area, and nothing. Then, a month later, they did another one....nothing again. Then, I had a new MRI done, and the MD's at the Pain Clinic told me there was not enough room to get the fluid inside...perhaps they did this in the wrong order...like maybe the MRI 1st ??? Guest guest
I had a series of injections. Basically, the only improvement I had was for about 4 to 5 hours after injection because of the numbing medication they use, which numbed the nerve for a little while. I did not notice any adverse reactions, but at the same time...didn't really help either. Hope this helps. I know the general rule of thumb is to try a course or two. But, if your insurance will let you... I would almost say skip it and go to the next step. Really haven't heard of many people who have had any better luck from multiple injections. > > Hi Everyone, > > I wanted to survey everyone to see if any of following apply to them: > > 1) For anyone who has had MORE THAN ONE lumbar epidural steroid injections, how many people had NO IMPROVEMENT after the 1ST injection, but then DID GET IMPROVEMENT with the 2ND or 3RD injection? > > 2) How many people had an adverse reaction, or PROLONGED or PERMANENT worsening of pain after an epidural? > > The reason I am asking is because I had 1 epidural, and had no benefit at all from it. Guest guest
I have for the most part had great relief from the shots and from RF ablation. I think what is most important is to have a really great pain doctor, who really gets to know you and your body. And to be able to communicate to him exactlly where it hurts. If any one is in new york, the doctors at beth israel hosp are great. Guest guest
I totally agree. The first time I went through this process, it didn't work out but the md's attitude was poor. This time, great md and great results Re: Re: Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection - Survey I had lumbar epidural (1) made things worse . had several in my neck , never lasted very long ... shaynal2003 <shaynal2003@ <mailto:shaynal2003%40> > wrote: I had a series of injections. Guest guest
I suffer from DDD and have for many years, I have chronic pain and I am wheelchair bound. I have been having the epidural injections as well as the rf (radio frequency) neuro ablasion done for at least 7 years if not more and I think it is wonderful. The epidural injections are quicker acting but only last a couple of months, sometimes less, the rf ablasion lasts longer anywhere from four to six months it is different for everyone. I usually have the rf done and then they spot inject the areas i still have pain in with the epidural. I get about 80 percent relief for about 4 months with this regime. I am sorry to hear anyone has reached the point of having to endure these procedures but there is hope for temporary relief for those of us that live with chronic pain! Every day is wonderful with just a bit of relief!!
Guest guest
I had the shots for years to put off surgery. My back was so bad that I knew I needed surgery, but I wanted to delay as much as possible. I tried the 3 shot series and the 2 shot series and what worked for me was the 2 shot series and having it done 3x a year. I definitely noticed a BIG difference from the 1st to the 2nd shot. I too, like you, was skeptical after the 1st, but was pleasantly surprised after the 2nd. It lasted for a couple of months and then I had to go in for the next 2. I knew when I needed surgery because the shots stopped working all together. My personal advise, unsolicited I know, is go least invasive as long as possible. Give it a try and make up your own mind. That is what I did and I was able to not have additional surgery for 3 years. I just had a fusion and although I know I will have to have more I am pleased at this point. Hope it helps, Lynda > > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > I wanted to survey everyone to see if any of following apply to > them: > > > > 1) For anyone who has had MORE THAN ONE lumbar epidural steroid > injections, how many people had NO IMPROVEMENT after the 1ST > injection, but then DID GET IMPROVEMENT with the 2ND or 3RD injection? > > > > 2) How many people had an adverse reaction, or PROLONGED or > PERMANENT worsening of pain after an epidural? > > > > The reason I am asking is because I had 1 epidural, and had no > benefit at all from it. Guest guest
I did a series of three shots late last year, but they didn't really help me and I had surgery, a L3-L5 spinal fusion in Feb. But I knew when I was doing them that according to the doctor the success rate was about 60% for people who had the problems that I did. But I figured 60% was good enough odds to try them if they would keep me from having surgery. My husband also did them last year and he did not have much relief after the 1st but noticed considerable improvement after the 2nd and even more after the 3rd. He is someday going to have to have surgery ... but for him, the shots have delayed it for a year already. > > > > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > > > I wanted to survey everyone to see if any of following apply to > > them: > > > > > > 1) For anyone who has had MORE THAN ONE lumbar epidural steroid > > injections, how many people had NO IMPROVEMENT after the 1ST > > injection, but then DID GET IMPROVEMENT with the 2ND or 3RD injection? > > > > > > 2) How many people had an adverse reaction, or PROLONGED or > > PERMANENT worsening of pain after an epidural? > > > > > > The reason I am asking is because I had 1 epidural, and had no > > benefit at all from it.
