Hi Marsha -

Thank you so much for all the great suggestions. My doctor actually suggested

physical therapy four times a week. Problem is I work 10 hours a day Mon-Fri,

and go to school four hours a night Mon-Thur. So I literally don't have the

free time for it. The best I'd be able to do is Friday nights and a lot of

times I'm doing housework, yard work, studying, etc. Once I'm done with school

I can definetly concentrate more on that. But I will definetly try the ice

packs though and see if that helps. I have a beeded one that's perfect for the

neck that I'll try placing along my back and see if that helps it. Isn't

Celebrex though more for joints and arthritis or am I thinking of something

different? I think I just need to get the swelling down. I was dealing with

nerve pain down my right leg a couple years ago that persisted for a good two

years. My doctor finally put me on a nerve blocker, which was originally given

to me to fight off my migraines and that has helped

me for about a year and a half now to be almost without pain. But then about a

month and a half ago I started with this new pain on my left side now. The Ibu

started helping it, until this past week.

Hope your rotator cuff gets better!!! And thank you again for all the

suggestions!!

Continuous lower back pain even with

medication

Hi everyone -

I just recently wrote to you about going back to my Neurosurgeon because of

lower back pain again where I can't bend forward or arch my back. He said

it's inflammation of my joints and everything in the area as a direct result of

my herniated discs. He put me on 600 mg of Ibuprofin twice a day and told me

that if that doesn't work that I might have to go for another epidural.

I usually have pain on my right side, but have always been told that I

should have pain down my left side because my herniated discs are more central

but

slightly to the left side. The pain that I just recently started with again

was on my left side. Now the pain is on both.

It was getting better being on the Ibuprofrin but now the pain is starting

again out of nowhere, and I even had slight muscle spasms the other day too.

Any suggestions? Heat, cold? Should I go for another epidural? I just can't

take it anymore!!

Heat helps my spasms, Jenie. Also it relieves the aching intense pain. I'm not sure it keeps inflammation down (reason for the ibuprophen) but I know it feels good to me so I use it, a lot, when I need it. Rubbing in Pain-Eze (mentholated pain relief lotion) also helps some.

Also I am not sure about the difference but I know they are the same class/type of drug: I use naproxen instead of ibuprophen. I think the main difference is that naproxen actually lasts in terms of pain relief for 12 hours while the ibuprophen only works for about 6 or 8 hours. Someone can please correct this if I am wrong, that is just my understanding and I am not a Dr. or pharmacist.

You may want to ask your pharmacist as I have been given some great advice on these things from mine including this info on the difference in the length of time naproxen works. They can also tell you exactly how many milligrams and how often you can safely take these OTC meds.

i too tried all of those non-drug items, for years and my knees still went to

bone on bone and i just couldn't walk anymore. and it was a double bullet as i

was limping from my knees, that stressed my back which pinched the right leg

nerve and then i really couldn't walk.

i am very active as well; weight training (have a bowflex), stationary bike,

can't swim (never given the chance to learn as a kid) but love the water and am

looking forward to the AquaJogger program. used to run a lot and that was

probably not good for my back or knees but.....too late to take all those miles

back now.

but i still believe that " motion is lotion " and i walk every day no matter how i

feel unless i am down with a bug or something. moves blood through the

" wounded " areas, cleansing, etc. well you know.....

i have a bad left shoulder--not sure if it is ligaments or the rotator cuff.

dislocated many years ago while lifting weights and now it is arthritic;

sometimes bothers me more than my back, expecially today for some reason. must

be the weather because my right knee was bugging me yesterday and there was no

reason for it....

Re: Continuous lower back pain even with

i tore my rotator cuff on my right side when i fell down the stairs in front

of my building and tried to break the fall by holding on to the railing. oh

well.

i have really bad arthritis all over the place and i have avascular necrosis

of knees and hips - particularly knees. i totally i,d, with you about the

knees. i've had AVN for about 18 years. i take a lot of vitamins: shark

cartilage, msm, omega 3-6-9 and glucosoiment sulfate plus chondroitin. i also

take sam-E 400. all of this stuff has helped me not to have to have knee

replacements. also, i have always been a gym rat, weight training, bicylcing and

also swimming. all that has a lot to do with pain control for me.

Hi Jenie ,

I would think that it wouldn't hurt to try both heat and cold packs to see if

you can get some relief.

Man I wish that I could get any kind of pain relief from just the Ibuprofen.

I have to take some heavy -duty pain meds {as do most of us here } to get any

of pain relief.

I'm not making light of your situation by saying that.

I have not had any of those epidural shots so I just can't advise you on

that. I do hope that you will get the answers that you need and will become pain

free.

Vicki,

makes me wonder if the Radiofrequency ablation was done correctly because that

fries the nerves, kills them and it takes them at least 3 months to begin to

grow back. they do have to get just the right nerves which is why they do it

with x-ray so they can see where they are going. if you still have pain after

one of these, that usually means there are different nerves causing the pain.

carlene, i dunno. this stuff is weird. this morning i was in pain. every

joint in my body was pulsating. and then i got the chills really bad. so i

took the oxycontin, lay down under 1,000 blankets and slept for an hour.

and then i got up and felt great. go figure. today is 3 weeks since surgery.

i went to lunch with friend and then walked around a little. i walked about

8 blocks today.

that just excited the hell out of me. i am a walker too.

marsha,

sounds like the bug i had a couple weekends ago; exact same symtoms. had to

turn up the heat in the house, put on sweatshirts and get under a blanket and

slept until i woke up sweating.

8 blocks, wow, that is great. hope you will not be too sore tomorrow. can you

tub soak yet or is it too soon after surgery?

helps sometimes especially when you get one of those spasms.o I had

pain all the way down my left side for a long time but the last 6-8

months before my surgery it started on my right side from time to

time. Never as bad as the left but still enough for me to know it

was there. Turned out there was a new developement on my back on teh

right that was causing it. So maybe that is what has happened to

you. Sorry to hear you are in so much pain I know its not alot of

fun. Hope time and rest helps the herniations if not you may have to

consider surgery down the road to totally relieve them. But I'd try

everything else I could first before I did that. Everything I have

read says sometimes they heal on their own but I know thats not

always the case either. I know several people who ended up having

surgery because nothing helped them get better. SO hope you are one

of the ones it works for best wishes. Sharon Group Owner

p.s. does he have you on muscle relaxers too?? those usually help

and Neurontin.

because of lower back pain again where I can't bend forward or arch

my back. He said it's inflammation of my joints and everything in

the area as a direct result of my herniated discs. He put me on 600

mg of Ibuprofin twice a day and told me that if that doesn't work

that I might have to go for another epidural.

is on both.

Rest? What's that? LOL.

The medication I'm on is similar to Neurontin, they just kept me on the one

that I'm on because it's been helping my migraines AND my back. He doesn't have

me on a muscle relaxer all the time, but my PCP actually gave them to me for my

muscles in my neck because of my reversed cervical curve. I was taking them

when I was getting the spasms last week but that has since stopped. I did

actually just go for another MRI and it didn't show anything new except for a

small hemangioma and maybe a cyst but that's up in my L3 which my doctor said is

too high for the pain I'm getting.

Hi sorry for the long delay, I get about 200 emails a day, and when I get

behind, I really get behind.

The following work for me. Ice packs, the blue gel type you can buy at

the drug store. I wrap them in a kitchen towel and apply directly over the

pain. Massage with a hand percussion massager. One of the best tools I

have, does require the help of a care giver. Ours is a Homedics dual head,

new about $50 we got it on sale for $39. Have had it 4 years now, really

breaks up the pain. New tool a Homedics SBM-300 Shiatsu massage pad. We

broke the bank and Christmas and spent about $125 for this. Thank God it

has a 2 year warranty because I can't see it holding up that long. You can

direct the massage up or down to hit the right spot. It is a deep massage,

can sometimes hurt, but afterwards it breaks up the pain. Needs no

assistance from care giver. I also have a tens but that is hit and

miss. Sometimes it's great, other times little effect.

Lastly when pain meds don't work, muscle relaxers do sometimes.

Hope this helps. Dave
