Top Stories of 2006: Unexpected

(Fort Wayne - WANE) Part two of our look back at the top 15 topics of 2006 deals with unexpected news. From mysterious big cats, to sudden breaks in some very cold cases, it's been a year full of surprises.

Hepatitis AThere was an unwelcome surprise for thousands of people who ate at the Coventry Pizza Hut in August, after an infected employee exposed as many as five thousand diners to Hepatitis A. The Health Department quickly mobilized shot clinics to treat diners from northeast Indiana, other states, even Canada.AnimalsAnimals generated some unexpected headlines in 2006. Large, aggressive, mute swans terrorized boaters on Lake . In County, a mysterious large cat had people scratching their heads and reaching for their video cameras. In Fort Wayne, the joy over the birth of a baby orangutan quickly gave way to sadness, when the baby's mother's died moments after childbirth.

ColtsAnother group of animals, the Indianapolis Colts, fell far short of fans expectations. After a 14-and-2 season, the team lost round one of the playoffs to the Steelers, who went on to be the Super Bowl Champions of 2006. Despite some late season losses this year, fans are crossing their fingers for the playoffs in 2007.Cold CasesThe year brought unexpected breaks in two of Fort Wayne's cold cases. A routine traffic stop in Texas netted Ben Blauvelt, the man accused of killing IPFW professor Maurice Lam, back in 1991. Blauvelt returned to Fort Wayne in December to face charges. And, 18-years after the kidnapping and murder of young April Tinsley, police made public four notes written by someone who claimed to have killed her. Despite the new evidence, her case remains unsolved.

Daylight SavingsIt wasn't unexpected, but Indiana's first experience with Daylight Savings sure caught some people off guard. For the first time in more than 40-years, most of Indiana experienced spring forward and fall back. There was some lingering confusion about the change, but most people seemed to take it in stride.
