Woman in hospital row high on hash

By mandeep singh

AN angry Bahraini woman high on marijuana caused havoc at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) yesterday, demanding Hepatitis C and other routine tests without being first examined.

The woman, aged in her mid-30s and accompanied by a female relative, virtually forced doctors to conduct the test - claiming she knew exactly what was wrong with her.

The tests came back negative, but did show that she had a large amount of marijuana in her system.

"She was given a detailed examination and it was found that she had an overdose of hashish," sources told the GDN.

"The overdose apparently made her feel dizzy, vomit and she developed pain in the chest."

They added that she was put on a course of antibiotics and painkillers.

"All other tests, including the ones she was initially demanding, were done on her," said sources.

"These tests concluded there was nothing medically wrong with her."

The woman was discharged last night after receiving symptomatic treatment for chest pains and a slight fever.

She stormed into the Accident and Emergency Department at around 11am and started screaming at doctors to force them into giving her the test, which would normally take three days before the results were known.

Another doctor said the woman had earlier gone to a private hospital to get the test, but left because it would have cost her BD200.

Two doctors tried in vain to persuade her to let them examine her.

"I only want you to order the tests that I want and admit me until the results are available," she said.

Accident and Emergency Department head Dr Nabeel Kamal said that sometimes "difficult" patients do show up at the hospital.

"During such times, we try to persuade the patients to see reason and co-operate with the doctors," he said.
