WHAT IS IT?

The Original Olive Leaf Extract is, as the name implies, derived from the leaves of the olive tree. It is a source of many phytochemicals, primarily oleuropein 20%, which enzymes break down into elenolic acid. Note: Despite some manufacturers claims, there is no Calcium Elenoate in pure Olive Leaf Extract. That is a synthetic invention. It comes in two different strengths:

The Original Olive Leaf Extract 500 mg per capsule.

Kid Well 100 mg per capsules.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Olive Leaf Extract is an antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic substance. It has long been known that when olive pulp was crushed and washed, that where the waste water was dumped, nothing could grow. It sterilized the soil. Historically, the extract was used in the age of the Napoleonic wars as an all around disinfectant and natural antibiotic. In 1854 it was found to be more effective than quinine against malaria, but these discoveries were not pursued until the 1970's when Upjohn pharmaceutical company tested it. They tested an active component of the extract, elenolic acid, against many viruses, including polio, herpes, flu and many others. They could find no virus that it didn't kill in vitro (in the test tube.) Unfortunately, they could not get it to work in vivo (in the body) because it bound to serum proteins. Finally, in 1989, Frederickson, a lay chemist, found a way to make it effective in the body. It turns out that Upjohn was chasing the wrong isomer and the mirror isomer (dextro-rotary) was not serum-bound. In fact, oleuropein is hydrolyzed in the body into the dextro-rotary isomer if it is extracted properly.

Subsequently, it was found to be effective against HIV virus, and many of the new, antibiotic resistant organisms.

A clinic in Hungary, staffed by American doctors, tested the extract against all infections seen in the clinic and found it to be effective against 98% of all bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections treated. Today, it is included in the formulary of several eastern European nations as their primary antibiotic.

The exact results of the "R" clinic in Hungary were as follows:

The entire leaf extract contains a complex structure of flavonoids, esters and multiple iridoids which inhibit the formation of resistance by disease causing organisms. It's primary mechanisms of action are dissolving the coating of bacteria and preventing viral replication. In the case of HIV virus, the extract is both a protease inhibitor and a reverse transcriptase inhibitor.

Among the pathogens which this substance has been shown to be effective against (in vitro) are:

Olive Leaf Extract is recommended for colds, cold sores (herpes,) flu, ear infections, eye infections, nose and throat infections, impetigo, pink eye, parasites, and most bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Olive Leaf Extract has a secondary immune system boosting effect by increasing phagocytosis (gobbling up foreign bacteria and viruses) in white blood cells.

Olive Leaf Extract has other properties, too. In clinical trials, it lowers LDL cholesterol by about 30%. It is a strong antioxidant and protects LDL cholesterol from oxidation. It is oxidized LDL that clogs up arteries.

Among the conditions it has been reported to help are Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, colds and flu, AIDS, herpes, Epstein-Barr, bladder infections, skin infections, eczema, fungus and yeast infections, Malaria and surprisingly, Psoriasis, Hemmorhoids, arrhythmias, and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA.) There is a theory that RA may be caused by infectious agents (such as mycoplasma) and it would be interesting to try it against other diseases that are suspected to be caused by infectious agents such as Multiple Sclerosis.

Finally, Olive Leaf Extract is also a vasodilator and lowers blood pressure and helps prevent angina attacks.

CAUTIONS

Olive Leaf Extract is non-toxic. However, a "die off" or Herxheimer's reaction may occur from killing too many pathogens too quickly. This is experienced as "flu-like" symptoms or allergic attacks which pass quickly leaving the patient feeling much better than before taking the extract.

Someone at risk for Herxheimer's should try a reduced dose at first, then work up.

Olive Leaf Extract may inactivate antibiotics and should not be taken with them.

The amino acids glycine, lysine, histadine, and cysteine (including n-acetyl-l-cysteine) may interfere with the action of one of the components of Olive Leaf Extract. However, there are at least six active substances in the extract and it may not have a significant clinical effect. These six substances work together to prevent resistance by pathogenic organisms.

Although Olive Leaf Extract will not harm normal gastrointestinal flora, it will attack certain soil based organisms as found in Nature's Biotic or Primal Defense, especially Bacillus subtilis.

Cheaper brands of the extract are now hitting the market. Not all are of equal quality. Extraction methods and stabilization are important in preserving the Oleuropein concentration as the following chart (data from 7/28/98 to 6/99) shows:

** This study was submitted to an independent laboratory by Ameriden. Neither Ameriden northe laboratory knew in advance whose sample was being tested.

While Oleuropein is the ingredient most studied, there are in fact 95 different chemicals in the leaf and a balance of ingredients seems to work the best. This product contains no fillers nor simple olive leaf powder which is quite inexpensive.

DOSE

The usual dose is one capsule 4 times daily. The dose may be increased if needed to as much as 4 capsules 4 times daily in the case of severe infections. For colds and flu take 4 capsules initially then 2 capsules every 4-5 hours for 2-3 days. Get Well which contains Olive Leaf Extract, may be more effective.
