This produces an inferior product unless boiled to concentrations that might be hazardous to you and your neighbors. Even then, the way you told if the lye was of sufficent strength was to float an egg in it, if enough of the egg floated to leave enough shell above the lye to aproximate the size of a groat (an old style coin) then the lye was considered strong enough. And THEN most cases it made a fatty concoction know as " Softsoap " most times. Basically you're setting yourself up for a LOT of work, that is hazardous to boot for very little return. Settlers did it because they had to, and they were spread out enough to cut down on the hazard to their neighbors and frankly, there was no EPA. Use lye and fat. And wear rubber gloves and goggles. There's books in the library and in bookstores, and sites on the web with recipies and times. Be safe. Bill There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Guest guest
The ancient source of lye was wood ash, but that's also the reason early soaps were undependable as to what the end result would be. They never knew the exact strenghth of the lye they were working with, so they usually had soap which was either too soft and gooey or too harsh on the skin. You will have to find a way to buy sodium hydroxide if you want to make real soap. Other than that, you'll have to stick with melt & pour. Hey, if it was easy and risk free, everybody would do it! The bad news is, there's no way to do it without a very strong chemical to turn the fats into soap. The good news is, a nice batch of soap is truly an accomplishment to be proud of. Good luck. But the old traditional way (natural way) is the use of lye. Yes, lye. Here is a link that may help you http://www.teachsoap.com/swirlsoap.html This method they are showing is a CP method. There are many methods of making soap. CP (Cold process) which takes weeks of curing. HP (hot process) which takes much less cure time for those of us who are impatient. LOL and several other methods of making natural soap with lye. Lye is very caustic, but once it has reached a certain stage it is no longer lye it has now become soap. I wish you much luck, and have fun! Shere' www.nature-zone.com -----Original Message----- From: thalia1804 [mailto:thalia1804@...] Hello everybody, my name is thalia and i have been a member of this group since November but have been away from home so i never actually followed the posts. So this is really my first day in Bath and Body Anyway, what i would like to know is: Is it possible to make a good soap using the traditional ingrediends or methods? By traditional ingredients i mean ashes from u know burned wood, essential oils, olive oil etc. I am a complete beginner and have never tried anything similar in the past but i would really like to do this the natural way - that is without any chemicals or dangerous ingredients. Plus, where i live is quite difficult to find ingredients that are not commonly used in everyday life etc. I would appreciate any advise or tips u could give Thanx Thalia

As many of you may already know, I am founder of Hep C Web Warriors and author of the original website ObjectiveMedicine.com, which had the work of my many years of carefully researched info collected on that one website.Due to illness and problems with my income/job my monthly fee to keep the url up on the web lapsed and some company bought my url right away. As a result I forever lost the url and would have lost the website and years of work completely if not for my devoted sister, Scarlet. She paid to start a new url and was able to salvage a good portion of my years of work.Thank you, Scarlet. Please feel free to visit the website, which is a gift and the new "home" of the ObjectiveMedicine website I created in 2000. I hope people will visit it again and love it as much as they used to. At least it was not lost forever, thanks to Scarlet! L. Guest guest
Pam, Hi, it's , I got a letter from him a long time ago, but had no phone to call him. I sent an email, but it wasn't from my old email address he would have recognized, so he didn't respond I think because he wasn't sure it was me. Then I was off the internet for quite sometime and life was hard for a while. I am glad to be back in touch. What is the best way to get in touch with him? Can you give me a link to his site? Good to hear from you and see the group is still alive and well! Re: [ ] Digest Number 1575 Nice to see you posting agani . Hope that things are well on your end.
