Gosh I hope your daughter's asthma doesn't change. Mine went from very

mild where it went undiagnosed my whole life, until I had an attack at

age 30 (10 + years ago) and had to take the steroids. Naturally I

didn't, after the initial attack faded from my memory. I didn't see why

I needed them. I took myself on and off them, and just last year at age

43 had a serious attack that took me many months to recover from. I hope

I didn't do any damage to my lungs, but my peak flow is only 370 ml. So

I don't have a lot of lung to play with.

What I'm trying to say is that if the doctors want her on the steroids,

she should follow their advice and also see them regularly, say, every 6

months. Asthma can really creep up on you and before you know it, you're

in trouble, especially as you age.

Thanks for listening!

Hi!

Yes, my daughter has had preventive meds. but she didn't like using

them. Was a constant fight. And she still had to use the fast

acting inhalors just as often as with out it, so doc said to just

drop it after about 6 months. We do have both aerochambers. There

is one that goes in like the regular inhalor, and one that is a face

mask. We used them when she was younger to make sure meds were

inhaled properly - hard to explain to a 2 month old how to do it.

But she got the shakes either way. Wasn't until we changed makers

that it didn't bother her. She does go on steroids off and on as

needed. Usually in the Spring, but in the winter at times now since

we moved to such a rainy place. She just takes it all in stride.

She has never known life with out it, and you know how kids adapt so

much better than us old folks. Thanks!

Love,

CArole K

Dear Carole,

Wow, she is a tough one! Good for her! I was told to stay away from cats

and horses too, but I can't. I have three RagaMuffin cats and they are

so cute. My doctor is puzzled by this, how can I have them when I am

highly allergic? The cockroaches I did give up! Ha!

It sounds like you have tried everything and she knows what to do. But

all those hospital visits. I am sorry she has severe asthma.

My nephew is developing possible asthma. He gets pneumonia just about

every month. My lovely sister-in-law, who I adore, has mild asthma too.

She did not really use steroids and she had a severe attack (peak flow

100 ml) and had to go into the hospital to save her. Consequently, she

lost her baby. It is not known if the asthma became worse because of the

pregnancy or if the asthma caused the pregnancy to terminate. Either

way, she was devastated and I felt so bad for her. Once out of the

hospital, her peak flow went to 450 ml. Now she may consider steroid

treatment as she wasn't using them before, only the proventil inhaler.

I am more than 10 years older and it took so long for me to recover the

second time around.

and Carole,

I really relate to what you are saying about Asthma.

I have asthma as do my children. Our daughter at 5

went in with her first asthma attack at 5 and her peak

flow was only 57, the lowest point on the peak flow

meter I believe is 50. I kept telling the doctors I

could hear her wheeze but they wouldn't believe me

until she had her worst attack. I had pneumonia last

year, my HMO didn't think I even needed to see my

doctor, I coughed so hard and it lasted six weeks.

Later when they did an x-ray they found that I have a

uninflated lobe of my lung, I asked the nurse what

caused that and she said it probably was from

pneumonia, now when I call and tell them I am having

problems they take me seriously!!
