Guest guest
Does anyone have a problem taking calcium supplements. My doctor recommended Caltrate Chewables. But, every time I start this I get a mild headache after a few days. The longer I take them the worse the headache becomes. Once I discontinue it gradually goes away but takes a few days. I'm wondering if it's the calcium or something else in them that is doing this. The doctor says this side effect is impossible, but my experience proves otherwise. Ingredients in Caltrate are: Vitamin D 200 IU Calcium 600 mg Magnesium 40 mg Zinc 7.5 mg Copper 1 mg Manganese 1.8 mg Boron 250 mcg Any insight is appreciated. Guest guest
I would try supplementing magnesium by itself. A good sourse is Natural Calm. Also, find out what the source of the calcium is. Guest guest
Thanks for the itp . Can you expand on why I should take magnesium without Calcium? I was instructed to take the calcium because bone density test results. Sherry > Does anyone have a problem taking calcium supplements. My doctor > recommended Caltrate Chewables. Guest guest
Hi Sherry, Here is a good link that explains the role of magnesium. Basically, I've read that calcium needs magnesium to be absorbed. If too much calcium is in the body, then it will pull magnesium from the body, creating a vicious cycle. http://www.zhealthinfo.com/calm.htm Hope this helps! Guest guest
Sherry, Cut them in half. More than 300 mg of calcium at one time will cause problems, calcium toxicity. The usual side effects are on the digestive system, although this can also affect your head. If you need to take 600 mg per day, take two halves at least five hours apart.
