Can anyone explain the INR when calculating a MELD Score means to me. I have a copy of LF test but understand what INR is. Bilirunin is 4.77 Creatintine is 2.2 and I need INR to calculate it.

Diane,

I'm not sure I can actually explain INR, but I'll tell you what I know about. The INR goes along with the prothrombin time (PT) to test your clotting time. I have a clotting disorder so I am on coumadin to keep my clotting time and INR higher than normal. From my labs, here is a correlation of PT to INR

PT INR

14.8 1.37

14.3 1.28

14.2 1.26

13.2 1.09

According to my lab, a normal PT would be 11.2 to 13.2, which would mean that an INR of 1.09 would be at the upper limit of normal. In my case, my doctors are trying to keep my INR above normal and in the 1.5 to 2.0 range, but we cannot seem to get the coumadin at the right dose to keep it there. My INR was too low on 6 mg coumadin, too high on 7 mg coumadin, and too low on 6.5 mg coumadin. Now we're trying 7 mg 3 days a week and 6.5 mg 4 days a week. I guess since I have a clotting disorder (which can cause my blood to clot too easily) I don't have a lot to worry about as far as my liver keeping my blood from clotting properly!

Don't know if I helped you any at all.

dianwalker,

INR is a clotting factor . It will appear as INR on your lab slip. It may not have been ordered it is not part of the standard hepatic profile. Check with your Dr'.s office. Remind them to order it next time, I'm sure with labs like that they want them repeated every one-two weeks. You can plug in the Creatine and the bilirubin using 1.0 for the INR but it will minimize your score.

Take care of yourself.

I do not know where the thread of this email started but a High INR means blood is thin and would bleed more easily -- a low INR (like mine .99) My Spleen was removed. So my blood is very thick. My knowledge on this - a family member takes meds to thin her blood because of a stroke and her INR is between 2.5 & 3.5 and bleeds easily.

Prior to transplant I cannot recall my INR but it took like 4 minutes to clot - after this special test they did to check it.

My INR is only 1.4, so it is not too much

higher than the norm. Yet, it definitely

is above, and as much as I can find, my numbers have never been elevated at

all. I have a friend who is DEMANDING

that I call my doctor on Monday. I

suppose that it would be best for me to call and see if I can get in before

Christmas…..HO HO HO!
