I was going to respond about quinine and how I liked it best with gin and a lime wedge... Quinine is often used for treating nighttime leg cramps...... hence I suppose that may be why Anita's doc recommended it, but leg cramps and restless leg syndrome are 2 different conditions. To much quinine and prolonged use of it (3 yrs.?) can cause serious side effects...cinchonism..(tinitis and/or impaired hearing, vision damage, chronic headaches and more.) Extremely large amounts or overdosing can cause neurological damage, coma and death. Of course if you mix it with gin maybe you wouldn't care. I hope all goes well when they pluck out your gall bladder. It is also an ingredient in tonic water, maybe a glass of that on ice minus the gin will keep another pill at bay. I have PBC x 7 years and am beginning to wonder if perhaps I may also be facing AIH as I certainly to experience flareups of a liver nature that put me down for a few months at a time. I wonder if there are any out there with AIH and type 1 diabetes and if so do you take the steroids or stay away from them because of the diabetes??? I have to have my gallbladder removed due to a very large stone in the bile duct neck and that is when a biopsy will be done to stage my PBC and to look at what else is going on. My GP says that the absence of fever is probably due to the 5mg of prednisone that I take daily for AIH, because prednisone tends to supress fever. I am not complaining, mind you! I normally run fever and get very ill with a sinus infection. But I couldn't help wondering what I should take if I did develop a fever. My GP had no suggestions because I have been told by my GI not to take Tylenol because of my liver disease, and I can't take aspirin because I take coumadin. Guest guest Posted December 29, 2002 Report Share Posted December 29, 2002 Layne - I been told if I get a fever Im to go to doctor with being immosuppressed, also pred cuts inflammation but I havent heard of it suppressing fevers, it didnt with me. Personally, if I had a temperature I wouldnt want to get anything over the counter for it as the body is fighting some sort of infection and a dose of antibiotics may be required. In cats, I have learned prednisone may make diabeties worse, but when we balance the insulin dosage to compensate for the gluconeogenic effects of pred, the cats can be balanced on both meds. You may want to check with your GE specialist about the balance, and how to monitor both. Guest guest Posted December 30, 2002 Report Share Posted December 30, 2002 Layne, I don't know if it will help, but I have chronis sinusitis, and what helps me is Sudafed 12 hour. I am one of the lucky who don't experience insomnia from it or excessive sleepyness. It will not treat an infection, or fever but it prevents the sinus fluid/debris from building up to an issue.
