Kat...with all due respect.... the liver itself has no nerves or pain

receptors (think back on your anatomy classes) what we refer to a

liver pain is the liver pushing out on its surroundings and pressuring

their pain receptors....needle biopsies in humans are done with local

anethesia and resulting pain is not from the liver but from nerves in

the pleura or surrounding musculature that may have been nicked during

insertion. It is undesirable to give full anesthesia as the patient is

asked to hold his breath so to keep movement at a minimum to prevent

just such nicking.

You are absolutely right Jerry.

They will give you Versed (if you beg) because it'll put you in a twilight as opposed to out cold but you are still able to breathe in deep, hold it and let go when they ask you to. This is why they will not put you under for liver biopsy. I've had 4.

I've also gone to 8 hepatologists and all of them said there is no pain associated with liver.......only pressure (possibly) surrounding if enlarged. Of the eight 4 are in New York, 1 at Mayo and 3 in Texas. (with a bunch of Gastros added to those numbers!)
