What do you all make of this?

Thank you so much for your input! It has been so comforting reading all

the posts, to know there are others facing this strange illness.

in Arlington Heights, Il.

, what a strange "diagnosis" you first had! Ecstasy?

First, most people who respond to standard therapy have normal life spans. About 20% do not respond to what is now considered conventional therapy.

The disease is progressive and, no, it can not be cured. However, the goal of standard therapy is to slow its progress.

My doctor told me I had made a splendid recovery from an extreme situation but that I might need a new liver in ten years. Which I figure I'm not likely to get at that age.

AIH seems to be an extremely variable disease in terms of severity and progress. I don't think anyone can tell you clearly what the future holds. I've certainly not been able to get much information, iin terms of a prognosis, from my doctor!

Incidentally, your starting dose of Prednisone and Imuran wasn't particularly high. So, you've had good results with relatively little medication.

You may want to get a standard reference book such as Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis and Liver Disease or a similar book by G. Worman, or both books. They cost well under $20 each. If your local bookstore doesn't have them, Amazon.com will ship them out, or you can get Palmer's book from her website for about $12.

Let us know how things go for you.
