I was a total wreck about having a biopsy.

I actually didnt show up for the one that my GI scheduled.

I finally did go though after talking to the radiologist about it. I just called the floor that I was to have the procedure on and they were wonderful.

My doctor said no calming meds...only the local. The radiologist said that they would absolutly not do it without something in the IV..

They gave me versed and phentalyn ( a pain med ) in the IV and the biopsy lasts a few quick seconds, I felt nothing and had no pain afterwards..

About 6 days later I started having pain in the liver area that radiated to my right shoulder and back..it kind of burned and ached..very sore.

My GI doc said that 90 to 95 percent of the people who have biopsies get a small collection of blood in their livers after a biopsy. Some never know that its there..others have pain on and off.

He also told me that if you have a fatty liver the pain will last longer. Because of all the fat in the liver the blood takes longer to dissapate.

If you are concerned about getting the meds...I recommend calling the people who do the procedure...you will be much more at ease with them..

Best of luck and keep us informed.

Hi Debby,

I didn't have any calming medicine and I actually don't remember having them

numb anything either! I've read about everyone's experience and I mine was

pretty much the same, the anticipation was worse than the procedure. After

they did my biopsy though, they made me get up right away!!! My daughter was

waiting down the hall and after I get dressed, I walked down to meet her. I

about passed out!!! She took one look at me and made me sit down. After

hearing how everyone had to lay still for a while I don't know what my Dr was

thinking!!!!

Love, K

Debby: For two of my biopsies I did not have any meds, only what you refer to as a numbing med (a shot like you get at the dentist's at the site of where they will insert the needle). It was a piece of cake both times.

The third one they did when I was under general anesthesia during surgery. That was even better. Hee, hee.

I will say an extra prayer for you.

Love and prayers -

Just looking for some feedback. I have to have the biopsy the 20th and they

have said that they only give the numbing medicine. Just curious

Debby,

My son had his first bx on Dec. 30. They gave him something right before(can't remember what) but it was either very, very subtle or a very small amount that I couldn't see any effects of it. He said he didn't really feel it either. Anyway I wouldn't worry if your doc doesn't give any meds as Devin said it's "a piece of cake". Getting the IV started was much worse than the bx.

Good luck to you and let us all know how it goes.

P.S. we still have not gotten results!!!!!! Kaiser....oh well.

Hi Debbie!

Haven't talked to you in a while. I also have had innumerable biopsies and last week have my first ever with shot of local lydocaine only. I was anxious about it. I wanted versed but honestly, even with the versed you still feel that shot and after the 5 seconds of torture from the shot I did not feel anything. It was hardly worth my getting worked up about.

Mind you I would rather take a stroll on the beach but honestly it wasn't so bad.

Good luck & hope you are well.

debby.....i've had 4 bxs and the last time I told them no numbing

.....just do it, afterwards I jumped up and went to play handball with

some friends and then some swimming before dinner and dancing. The next

morning I shoveled 1/2 ton of top soil for my moms garden and then

played golf.

You wuss! Go and get the damn thing done before you drop dead from

worry...

It's over in less than 10 secs and then they give you ice cream and let

you color if you want.

Seriously all I ever had was shots of Lidocaine and the most pain I felt

was the numbing shot, which is like having your blood drawn or less.

Dwelling on and anticipating something that hasn't happened yet, only

makes things worse than they really are. You are going to be just fine

and you will be able to tell war stories like the rest of us. :)

Wow Patty, your test was fine then! That is good to hear. Now, I need some clarification. If they give you some versed, etc, they DONT do the numbing? It never occurred to me that they would not numb the site for both. WHOA. I am glad that I am going to have the numbing! It would NOT be fun to have the happy juice and STILL feel it all! THANKS!

Debby,

I think they always numb... happy juice of not. Then you have to lay on your side - that's where the ice cream comes in patty
