Like the eye of a deer...hence buck eye..

Actually tho its a reddish color a little smaller than a golf ball with

a large area of brown and does look like an eye. It is very smooth and

shiny...it's bitter and is not eaten that I know of. When Ohio state

played for te national championship in Arizona they did a piec on an

Arizona town named Buckeye ....the townspeople had no idea what it was

or why the town was named so. I'll see if I can find a picture of one on

te web.

Jerry, the foothills here are loaded with Buckeye trees. They are indeed interesting! As your information on the Buckeye trees said, the poison WAS used to kill the fish. Our Native Americans used the poison on the end of their spears. Such an interesting looking tree!

Quick summary of a Buckeye by my husband... slow to learn ME...

1. 34 yrs ago... husband defined buckeye...a worthless nut..

2. I believed him.

3. Never challenged him and told others many times that definition.

4. 2 yrs ago...found out HE LIED!!

5. Husband was sleeping.

6. he was rudely awakened by me...

7. I jumped in middle of his chest.

8. He laughed till he cried.

I am from Ohio...I am a Buckeye. This ladies and gentlemen....is a true story.

Debbie... I found out there are buckeye trees in California when I was

looking for a picture there is also a type in Texas....the nuts are

basically the same but there are some slight diffeences....the texas one

has an eliptical or oval shaped center that makes it look more like a

cat's eye and I think it grows on a shrub like tree rather than the 40

footers we have...I think .. I didn't see a picture of the California

one..

Indeed Jerry! When you showed that huge tree....I wondered if it was a dogwood tree! Our trees are rather scrubby and stubby. Not quite like your elegant ones! The nuts are more rounded which does look like a buck's eye. They probably adapted here this way because the water is a bit less that in Ohio!
