Guest guest
I thought this was interesting.....wanted to share it with you..... Haven't read all of it though, eyes giving out! LOL! Good night! **HAPPY**HOLIDAYS** **AND WARM HUGS** Bert. Hope And Help For Those Of Us With Depression and/Or Chronic Pain What is Known About Depression? REMEMBER!! You Are Not Alone!! ,as much as it may seem. One of the most scary experiences a person will ever suffer during their lifetime is to experience a form of depression. Over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime. Over 1 in 20 Americans have a depressive disorder every year. Depression is one of the most common and most serious mental health problems facing people today. You Are Not to Blame!! Many people still carry the misperception that depression is a character flaw, a problem that happens because you are weak. They say, "Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps!" and "You're just feeling blue... You'll get over it." Depression is not a character flaw, nor is it simply feeling blue for a few days. Most importantly, depression is not your fault. It is a serious mood disorder which affects a person's ability to function in every day activities. It affects one's work, one's family, and one's social life. Today, much more is known about the causes and treatment of this mental health problem. We know that there are biological and psychological components to every depression and that the best form of treatment is a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Contrary to the popular misconceptions about depression today, it is not a purely biochemical or medical disorder. So What Does Cause It? There are as many potential causes of depression as there are people who suffer it. Depression is most often experienced as a depressed mood, which may sometimes be related to some recent, notable event which occurred in one's life. While depression may be related to feelings of grief after the loss of a loved one, those feelings are natural. Depression caused by medications or substance or alcohol abuse is not typically recognized as a depressive episode. Depression experienced after certain medical procedures (such as post partum depression) is recognized, though. Family history and genetics also play a part in the greater likelihood of someone becoming depressed in their lifetime. Increased stress and inadequate coping mechanisms to deal with that stress may also contribute to depression. What Do I Do Now? We have developed the information here to act as a comprehensive guide to help you better understand depression and find out more information about it on your own. Choose from among the categories CLICK HERE(it will be on your left under disorders and treatment) to begin your journey into recovery from this treatable disorder. REFERENCE:National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Mental Health, DHHS Publication No. (ADM) 91-1695 (1991) From the CMHC Website at here, and also Click Here, for a large variety of health problems and healing (excellent medical website). When you think of depression, you may think of feeling down or blue or maybe "being down in the dumps". These feelings are definitely real feelings, and they do justify being called 'depressed', but for others, depression may be hidden beneath other symptoms that seem to have nothing to do with "the blues". Maybe you've suspected that you have depression, but just aren't sure. Perhaps someone in your family or a friend, or even your doctor has suggested that you might be depressed. Read on and you may recognize and learn to understand some of the less obvious symptoms of depression so that you can feel more comfortable discussing the way you feel with your doctor or others. Factors Related to The Development of Depression: Biological Factors Possible genetic influence Hormonal influence (drop in estrogen and progesterone) Biochemical activities of monaminde oxidase (AMO) and catecholamines (high levels). Psychological Factors Dependency Low self-esteem Powerlessness Ambivalence Guilt Cognitive Factors Narrow, negative perspective called "cognitive triad": view of self, world, and the future. Conclusions drawn on inadequate or contradictory evidence. Overgeneralizations from one instance. Focus on a single detail rather than on the whole. Distortion of long-range consequences, hence bad judgement. Sociocultural Factors (Social situations that contribute to feelings of powerlessness and low self-esteem. 1. Status of minority groups. 2. Status of women in male-oriented profession and business culture 3. Role loss such as loss of parental role in empty nest phase. 4. Being the object of cultural stereotypes (e.g., blacks, aged, Jews, etc.). ~~~~SO WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT????~~~~ Do we have to live like this the rest of our lives? NO!!! We can fight, because we have rights!! Why are we allowing doctors to give us some LABEL that will probably make everything worse trying to get better because this doctor misdiagnosed you.For Depression I would Like to try a little formula that I have made on my own. The reason I did this is because I wanted to help myself, being and RN, and I knew I would get labeled for the rest of my life, and I was scared to. There is nothing to be afraid of by being labeled and it is a much faster way to get better than my way. So if you aren't afraid of seeing a pyshiatrist, by all means please see one as soon as possible!! For Chronic Pain patients please check out Under the Chronic Pain pages. Our bodies contain maybe millions of them, zapping messages to each other including what hurts (feelings), and the definition for it (in my and Keane Encyclopedia of Medicine) is the it is a nerve cell, any of the conducting cells of the nervous system, consisting of a cell body containing the nucleus and its surrounding cytoplasm, and the axon and dendrites. Sounds like just a bunch of jibberish, huh,?? Well I will try to explain it's real role in this jungle of nerves, muscles, bones, cartalige, etc, where it really comes into play, especially with pain.
