Dear Connie,

I have CT scans fairly often depending on what's going on. It's one way to check for ascites and other things going on. I have to have one every 6 months for the tx clinic.

Thanks Amy,

Devin had his CT yesterday, all went well. The tech said he coulndn't see anything out of the ordinary..he's really not allowed to comment so who knows. I was hoping we would have the results before his biopsey tomorrow. They said it would take about four days.

What is ascites ?

Connie....I seem to be following Kat in catching up on my email.

Ascites is any abnormal buildup of fluids within the abdominal cavity.

It can have many causes but is most often associated with liver disease

....specifically as a complication in cirrhosis. It is mainly caused by a

change in osmotic pressure due to a decrease in albumin found in severe

liver disease and combined with portal hypertension caused by scarring

that interferes with the transporting of blood through the portal system

(portal vein). This results in blood backing up and the resulting

pressure differences allow fluids to leak thru vessel walls into the

abdominal cavity. Your belly becomes large and distended . It is usually

treated with diuretics , particularly spironolactone and lasix...and a

low salt/sodium diet. Sometimes it gets bad enough to drain

(paracentesis) but that is only a temporary condition as it will return.

A shunt can be introduced to to reroute blood around some of the portal

system so as to prevent back up and a procedure called TIPS is also

sometimes used, (this procedure runs the risk of exacerbating

encephalopathy another complication of cirrhosis) I can send a site on

each of these if you wish. A scan is sometimes used to detect it but if

you had it as bad as I you'd know it. I was drained 4 times. The first

time they removed 2 1/2 gallons of fluid from my belly. The build up of

this fluid can excert pressure on your lungs and heart, causing

difficulty in breathing and heart problems. Also the ascitic fluid runs

a risk of causing a bacterial poisoning ---peritonitis--which is very

serious and fatal if untreated. Antibiotics are used as a prophalaxis.

I have some pictures in my files...i'll see if I can find them.

Jerry,

Wow! What you have been through. I often do paracentesis on animals, and

we have to be very careful not to crash their vascular system by draining

too much fluid (relieves pressure on local vessels and causes overflo of

blood, stress on heart etc.) at once. Most of the time it is for

cancer/FIP, but sometimes in dogs for heart or liver disease. I almost

thoukght mom had to have it done, but responded to IV lasix with loss 17

lbs. in 2 days. And her heart/severe shortness of breath went away.:-).

My hats off to you, and all the rest who dealt with severe signs.
