Personally I don't know as I've only dealt with hypo symptoms. It's

got to be quite scary for you to be going back and forth between the two.

You can find my notes from the Flechas visit a few weeks ago if you

search on lyn122.

Ellen,

Did your extreme symptoms start or get worse when you started the

lugol's?

I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's (also with bad hyper symptoms),

which came on strong after using iodine. Some Hashi's people don't do

well on iodine though it seems like most do. So if your problems started

when you stared the iodine, that may be a sign for you to stop. You can

always stop for a few days to see if it makes a difference. It took

about 3 days for me to notice a change.

I don't have any info on iodine being used to help a thyroid storm but I

would be reluctant to try that on my own.

Lugol's is the same as Iodoral, but in liquid form. Just check the

bottle to find out how concentrated it is. Iodoral has 12.5mg iodine per

pill.

Take care,

Sharon

Are you sure this is a true storm or just hyper form a thyroid dump from

finally getting enough adrenal support for it to get into the cells?

iodine may actually add more thyroid to the situation and I think the

suggestion to stop it for a few days is a good one, just so you will know.

Lugol's that's not watered down (85% water, 10% potassium iodine, 5% iodine)

is 12.5 mg per 2 drops.

I have read in Brownstein's book that sometimes when using lugol's

etc. that this can happen and you need to lower armour. I had these

hyper symtoms before the lugo's.

I am pretty sure this is not a dump. It feels quite different than

that. Since on the lugol's I have had to lower my amour. I just do

not know whether to keep going on the lugol's or not.

My doctor did say it was a storm but I do not seeem to be coming out

of it. I also read in Brownstein that some have to alternate taking

idodine every other day. I wish I could find a doctor in Nashville

that could help with all this.

I seem to have tried everything to stop the (what I thought was hper

and my doctor says is thyroid storm) symtoms. The diahhrea and chest

pains and insomnia are the worst.

I actually am starting to look like I am hyper. My doc says that

what is happening to me is rare and is not grave's disease. I have

read that you can have hashi's and graves at the same time but he says no.

There is so much conflicting info that I stay confused

Thanks

Ellen,

As soon as I got the diagnosis I started myself on Cortef 5mg/4x a

day. I felt much better immediately as I think many hyper symptoms

are really low adrenal symptoms - the adrenals struggle to keep up

with all that thyroid energy. My doc did not prescribe it but I had

some left over. I felt it was absolutely the right thing to do after

reading " Safe Uses of Cortisol " by Jefferies.

My doctor prescribed alpha lipoic acid (300mg 2x/day) and 30 drops

of bugleweed 2x/day. I decided on 100mg alpha lipoic acid 2x/day and

5mg lithium aspertate. I did add 30 drops of bugleweed 1x/day, but

found it was too much (hypo symptoms) and stopped it. Of course, I

was not having a thyroid storm as you are. Bugleweed seemed really

powerful in reducing hyper symptoms.

Also, I stopped the iodine as it was clear it was aggravating the

problem.

Hope that helps,

Sharon

Maybe you need a new doctor.

Does your chest hurt because your heart rate is so high?

If so, you should be on Inderal or other beta blocker.

Thyroid storm is a life threatening emergency.

Here's info on using Lugol's Solution for thyroid storm -

http://www.emedmag.com/html/pre/cov/covers/031506.asp

Iodine immediately inhibits both new hormone synthesis (by blocking

organification, known as the Wolf-Chaikoff effect) and the release of

thyroid hormone. It also decreases gland size and vascularity. This

effect is transient, however, lasting approximately one to three

weeks. One to five drops of a supersaturated solution of potassium

iodine or Lugol's solution can be given three to four times a day.

Iodine usually is given 7 to 14 days prior to surgery. In thyroid

storm, sodium iodine may be given intravenously at 0.5 to 1 gm every 8

to 12 hours. It is important to give the iodine at least one hour

after administration of a thionamide to prevent possible worsening of

hyperthyroidism.

**************************

http://www.thyroidmanager.org/chapter11/11_iodine.htm

When iodine is to be used therapeutically in Graves' disease, one

usually prescribes a saturated solution of potassium iodide (which

contains about 50 mg iodide per drop) or Lugol's solution (which

contains about 8.3 mg iodide per drop). and co- workers161

found that 6 mg of I- or KI produces a maximum response. This fact was

reemphasized by Friend, who pointed out that the habit of prescribing

the 5 drops of Lugol's or SSKI three times daily is unnecessary.162

Two drops of Lugol's solution or 1 drop of a saturated solution of

potassium iodide two times daily is more than sufficient.

The therapeutic response to iodide begins within two to seven days and

is faster than can be obtained by any other methods of medical

treatment. Only 3% of patients so treated fail to respond. Men, older

persons, and those with nodular goiter are in the group less likely to

have a response to iodide. Although almost all patients initially

respond to iodide, about one-third respond partially and remain toxic,

and another one-third initially respond but relapse after about six

weeks.165 The use of iodide as definitive therapy for thyrotoxicosis

has been discarded in favor of the modalities previously described.

*********************************************

If your heart rate is high, are you on Inderall or other beta blocker

to slow it down?

If your heart rate isn't high, what exactly are the thyroid storm

symptoms?

I'm not sure what strange doctor would have you on even a grain of

Armour while in thyroid storm, either. I mean you're overproducing

thyroid hormone, and he's not stopping the ARmour completely?

Also, did the thyroid storm start after you started Lugol's Solution?

Not everyone reacts well to it, you know. It can cause hyperthryoridism.

As for dehydration, you say you have weak adrenals but are taking

Prednisone (medrol) instead of Cortef (hydrocortisone.) Prednisone

isn't the same as Cortef, doesn't have the salt retaining properties

that helps stop dehydration.

Another thing that can stop thyroid storm is more Prednisone. At high

doses, it inhibits T4 to T3 conversion and will stop it.

I am not sure whether lugol's is helping or not. I have

> read contraindications of lugol's in a thyroid storm. I have many

> symtoms of thyroid storm or hyper like severe chest pains, agitation,

> weight loss despite eating all the time because I am starving,

> insominia, heat intolerance, eyes bothering me, lids saging badly,

I assume your temperature is elevated?

I doubt this, having been hyperthyroid and having thyroid storm. Now that I take iodine I think it would have been just what I needed when I was so sick, instead of partial thyroidectomy. I also think adrenals are involved in hyper. These are wonderful healing therapies, not to be feared.

Gracia

High iodine can fuel OR arrest hyperthyroid or thyroid storm,or both in sequence. It's unpredictable and very imprecise.Carol

THYROID STORM - A severe form of hyperthyroidism caused by excessive

quantities of thyroid hormones. Thyrotoxicosis may occur as a complication of

Grave's disease. Symptoms include weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness,

heat intolerance, increased sweating, sleep difficulty, muscle cramps, fatigue,

diarrhea, thirst, muscle atrophy, bounding pulse, tremor, protruding eyes

(exophthalmos), high blood pressure, and menstrual irregularities. Death can

result from congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. May be associated with

goiter.

Thank you! The ER doc was insisting that this is what caused the heart attack

and the other 4 docs were arguing with him. But they made sure that I was off of

my thyroid meds for a long time afterwards and then they put me back on half of

the original dose. I think they were trying to avoid a malpractice

suit.....400MCG of Synthroid/Levothyroxine is way too much. I didn't know that

until much later.

You may still have grounds for suing. The manufacturer's dosing

guidelines say the maximum full replace dose is 200 mcg. Even though

they make a 300 mcg tablet, the dosing guidelines say it is very

unlikely that anyone would ever need to exceed 200. You would need to be

extremely large to justify 300, let alone 400 mcg.

I guess it could be interpreted as such, but it is supposed to stop thyroid

storm immediately. And it has been used for that b4 fear of iodine crept in.
