Guest guest
Hi Joe: I don't think we have spoken but read your post. The doctors at the University of Miami say NO to herbal. The reason we were given is there has not been proper research done and you don't know how they will react with your medications. For me that was enough said plus my daughter Jodi was taking so many meds. pre-transplant that I don't think we could have gotten her to take anymore anyway. I know there are some people in the group that do take herbal remedies and to each there own, this is just my opinion. Guest guest
Joe, herbal remedies and vitamin therapy are generally considered very risky. Milk thistle seems to be benign, from what I read. The important thing is to discuss with your doctor anything you're considering taking other than what's prescribed. That includes cough medicine, vitamins, aspirin, Tylenol, acne remedies, anything at all, regardless of how unimportant it may seem. Those of us with liver problems can't tolerate things that would be no problem for someone with a healthy liver. Remember that herbs and drugs are frequently indicated as possible triggers for AIH; they certainly can cause problem even for healthy people. Many of us became ill for the first time after using herbs, vitamins, analgesics, antibiotics, etc. Harper (AIH dx 5/00)

Guest guest
Just my take on it...I just got back from a reflexology and accupuncture treatment! Ahhhh....sheer heaven! Had the reflex for 1 hour and then an hour of accupuncture. I have had accupuncture before, but this time, they want me to come for 3 days a week and then taper off to two days and then every other week. I am going to have to check my insurance first to see how much they will pay....they made a statement that accupuncture works better if you have several treatments closer together rather than once every two weeks or month or so. It made sense to me.... So, I am going to go at least on Saturday and then Monday....hopefully, it will help. The reflexologist said that there is another woman with AIH there who has little function of her liver now and that she is doing MUCH better since having the accupuncture treatments regularly. I am really excited to hear that and hope it works for me too! I know that accupuncture has helped me at times, and am really hopeful as well! Another thing this accupuncturists told me (he was a medical doctor in Shanghi for many years), was that the reason that the liver has problem is that the portal vein clogs and that is what causes the liver damage! Any ideas on this? debby [ ] Any "alternative" remedies? Is anyone taking any alternative remedies -- herbs, etc.? Anything helping? On the other hand, which meds seem to help?Just curious,Joe

That way, I will be more informed about what I really have and how bad it is! debby PCS is Primary sclerosing cholangitis, often an overlap disease with AIH. It's characterized by inflammation and damage to the bile ducts. I'd suggest you get your hands on a basic reference book, which should cost $15 or less. One is Hepatitis and Liver Disease by Dr. Palmer. Dr. G. Worman has a very similar guide for about the same price, with a more scholarly tone. Guest guest
Thanks Harper for the info! I just am too new at knowing much of this stuff. Also, my GI talks about PCS and acronyms like that and I must ask her about it all the next time I see her. That way, I will be more informed about what I really have and how bad it is! debby Re: [ ] Any "alternative" remedies?
