Guest guest
Just curious if anyone has had their doctor recommend any herbal supplements for the liver. I cant seem to get a doctor that will actually say that it is OK or not OK. My doctor tells me that they are not trained on using anything like that for any health condition and that it can hurt you more than help. Greg Kaliszewski Houston, TX Stay away from herbal supplements. I don't have time to go into it right now; perhaps someone else can. Use of herbs has caused AIH for some. Others that may be safe for people without liver disease can be extremely dangerous for us. Milk thistle may be okay. Excessive vitamins also can be very harmful, especially for us. Too much Vitamin A can be a trigger for AIH. When using Prednisone, you need to be take about 1500 mg/d of calcium with Vitamin D, and also take a basic multi-vitamin. Greg Kaliszewski Houston, TX Greg, a follow-up to my previous message: You can learn more about herbal supplements and vitamin therapy from basic reference books such as Palmer's Hepatitis and Liver Disease and a similar book by G. Worman. These books are readily available on-line and at many bookstores. Harper

I don't take anything unless it's been approved by my doctor. Ann Greg -- check everything you consider taking, even cough medicine, OTC medicines, with your doctor, your pharmacist, and on-line. If the three checks don't agree, ask more questions. Harper

Guest guest
Greg, I think one reason doctors dont readily endorse herbal approaches is because there is so little control over the production...no telling what the real strength or purity of the product is. Also, just as the liver metabolizes medications, foods, chemicals, etc, would do the same with herbal products...dont know that there is enough research on them to give doctors enough information, not to mention how the herbals would interract with prescribed medications. Some herbals may even cause more problems for the liver; I remember seeings cautions against certain ones (gingko??? darn brain fog) as they would be harder on the liver. Just follow the recommendations of the doctor treating you. nne > Just curious if anyone has had their doctor recommend any herbal supplements > for the liver. Guest guest
Greg, One (of many) complicating factor is that many herbs are immune system enhancers, with AIH our immune system is over-enhanced and we take prednisone to suppress it. The effect of many herbs on the immune system is unclear therefore one reason to stay away. Patty - Miami -----Original Message-----From: flatcat9@... Guest guest
There was an article in the paper yesterday about Kava..has show to cause liver toxicity in people, Ephdrea or Ephedrine all can be triggers and very dangerous to the liver. There is no control over where and how these herbs are handled and until there are some good studies done on all of these so called " herbs " my guess would be that your liver would like you to stay the hell away from anything that your doc didn't tell you to take. People think the word " herb " sounds so safe but whatever it is called it is a drug that your liver has to process. Better safe than sorry, Peggy
Guest guest
Peggy, That is so true. For some reason, people see the word " natural " and assume it is totally safe...but when you think about it, arsenic is " natural " ..............ok..that was a little extreme...lol ; but the point is anything that you ingest is going to have an effect, and better to be cautious. nne > There was an article in the paper yesterday about Kava..has show to cause > liver toxicity in people, Ephdrea or Ephedrine all can be triggers and very > dangerous to the liver.
