Guest guest
Bert, A lot of people live without a spleen. It sometimes has to be removed due to injury. The way it has been explained to me is that because my liver is working so hard to filter blood due to damage (started with fibrosis now have cirrhosis) the spleen gets enlarged because it also has to work overtime that this causes decreased platelett count. (Very simply stated). They do not want to remove spleen because it does help fight off infection. If it does have to be removed they put you on antibiotics at the very onset of any type of infection because you do not have the natural defenses that most people have. I guess this poses a problem for we people who are all ready immunosuppressed.
