Dear Jeanette:

I have a very enlarged liver, too. The last time I had a biopsy (last April), they did it laparoscopically and the surgeon said that my liver was so big that it stretches its capsule all the way over to the left side in front of my spleen. They say that is what causes my chronic left side pain. The jury is out on why it is so large, especially since the surgeon saw many areas of cirrhosis (which generally causes the liver to shrink). The surgeon thought it was inflammation, and the hepatologist thought it was due to regenerative nodules (areas where the liver has regenerated abnormally from the initial disease). All I know is that it's very uncomfortable. Are your numbers stable? Mine have been stable for several years now. The best thing to do would be to ask your doctors what they think about it.

Happy New Year!

Jeannette, from what little I am finding out about AIH, it could be a part of the problem, for "hepatitis" means inflamed liver. To me, inflammation means enlarged, but I really am NO doctor! Just a simple person!!! (could be a double meaning there!) Anyway, I would find another doctor if he has questions about AIH.

Hi everyone, can someone answer a silly question. Every time i go to see the doctors they always say i have a very enlarged liver is this normal with my problems AIH and Cirhosis because the doctors seem surprised everytime. If it's not normal has anyone any ideas as to what could be causing it.
