Guest guest
We've definitely had discussions on UV light before whether using a wand or embedded in a vacuum cleaner. The concensus is that while they may work to kill or sterilize, it won't get rid of your infestation. I remember one person saying they used UV in their car and the only thing it did was to fade the fabric. Before I got the air purifier, I actually got a UVC air cleaner. Note, there's a difference between " cleaner " and " purifier " . Cleaners will sterilize the air using UVC, purifiers will filter the air particles with some form of a filter - whether you have UVC in the design of the purifier is another thing. I found Therapure UVC purifier at Wally World for $100 so I thought what the heck, can't hurt. Now, to answer your question Judy about whether UV works... probably... Do UV products work for our needs, which is to eradicate the mites, IMO, sadly, no. If you're using a UVC wand, you'd literally have to hold the wand up to every wall space, all over the floor, for at least 20 seconds for the limited amount of exposure the wad can give at any one time. It's just not suited for our use. Having said that though, I did dabble around with more of a hands off approach with this product before buying the air purifier: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11116287 It's an air sanitizer, meaning, it has a fan inside which moves air through this metal cylinder where there are UV lights inside. I ran it for a few weeks at my place but honestly, I don't think it made a difference. It may work very well for to kill the flu germs tho. I just don't feel it moves enough air. The fan is one of those fans that you get inside desktop computers so it's really not convincing. I still have it and have it sitting right next to the air intake of the HVAC system but I may return it. Good thing about Costco is that you can return anything you want to return whenever. I think the air purifier (the one with the filter) did more to get rid of the specks than anything else. > > Dear Kixx, > I don't know what role the UV light plays in the air purifier, but I just received an e-mail from a friend who said she knows of someone who uses a UV wand to pass over everything in the house, including her pets, and claims it gets rid of the mites immediately. Since this came from a friend of a friend, and they do not have mites nor have experienced the battle, and since others here have used the UV wand to detect these things but not to eradicate them (to my knowledge), I don't know how much credence to give this report. I wondered if you or any others could enlighten me on the uses of the UV wand since I know nothing about it, nor how to use it. I believe Rita mentioned they use it (or maybe it was the black light?) to check themselves after returning from the yard. Thanks for all your input. > Best regards, > Judy > > Air purifier > > > I'm sure we've discussed them before but I do have one and I believe it has reduced the amount of stuff that I see on my skin. If you believe that there the specks and lint are floaters, then having a purifier makes sense, right? You can also believe the specks came out of your pores but surely they can't all be. > > I went to Walmart and picked up a Therapure UVC air purifier. The idea is to filter out the lintballs and specks that would otherwise land on us and cause misery. And for $100, the price is actually cheap but it's surprisingly built quite well. I think this is one product that we can get even if we didn't have this affliction. I got UVC just incase it really did kill or sterilize whatever's in the air. The placement of the UV light and the amount of time it hits the air as air passes through is questionable, but hey, just incase. > > I think an air purifier helps especially when you vacuum. I usually put the filter in the direct path of the vents on the vacuum cleaner so any dust coming out will be trapped. When I sleep, I have it next to the air mattress so whatever floaters that come out of my body will be sucked right in. > > As with all products, YMMV, but I like it. > > Here's the link. > http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9189156 > > Note, it's not HEPA filter but HEPA-like permanent filter, which I prefer anyway since it's reusable after cleaning. >
