Some doctors don't think these three typologies are very meaningful. Others believe the divisions do offer some help in prognosis, treatment decisions. Most books, including Palmer, discuss the types. They aren't "strains" but categories or types. Harper

Harper Dear Harper and Bert: It's important to note that not all AIH patients fall into the 'types.' I don't match any of the types, but like Harper said earlier, was diagnosed through process of elimination. For the first year that I was ill, my doctor referred to my case as 'Steroid Responsive Hepatitis.' It wasn't until I saw a hepatologist at the University of Washington that they finally started calling it AIH. Kathy (AIH) Seattle area Yes, I get the feeling that the three categories are fairly general attempts at sorting out types of AIH and how they may respond. I've never been told what type I fall into and haven't bothered to ask. Darn, I wanted to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge this afternoon to celebrate New Year's Eve and feeling well, but, looking out the window, it looks as if rain is moving in. I did it for the first time last New Year's; it was quite an accomplishment for me then. I'm much more able now. Harper
