Guest guest
I would think if the pig is less than 72 hours since it was butchered(they said it can live on the surface of something for 72 hours) and the pig was infected, then you can get it. That's why for other reasons they always say wash your hands if you've touched raw meat. It may actually stay on the pig longer if it can live longer in meat. I don't know if we get our pork from mexico though so it might not even be an issue. Then you think of all the pigs in the world, what are the chances the one you buy has that virus...My Mom said today that it will take like 13 weeks to get a vaccine made. Also, that the anitviral drugs are working...so I think we're pretty much ok. I'm impressed at how well it seems the CDC is working at this. In a message dated 4/28/2009 9:16:07 A.M. Guest guest
So that's what he said. All pork should be thoroughly cooked all the time? I don't see any problem with what he said. Could you elaborate? By the way, Dr. Oz is a cardiac surgeon too at one of the most respected hospitals in New York, and heads one of their departments. I am not promoting him, but he does have excellent credentials and experience. I may or may not agree with what any doctor says about anything from time to time, but that doesn't mean I distrust them out of hand, especially someone with his resume. Guest guest
The flu viruses are on the animals, and there are people who either live or work in close proximity to them. They breathe them in, and eventually, the virus mutated. It's pretty simple really. In the U.S. we don't realize the lack of sanitary facilities and practices used in other countries, and so to us things like this seem bizarre. Look at all the food illnesses that have come about since illegal immigrant workers are on the farms, warehouses, factories and restaurants handling the food we're supposed to eat. Guest guest
You can, that's why Dr. Oz and everybody else is saying to make sure the pork is well cooked. You can also get trichinosis from undercooked pork. Pigs are dirty animals that live in dirty surroundings, and although I really enjoy it, I try not to eat it too often and always make sure I cook it very thoroughly. Guest guest
National news mentioned this morning that the virus can 'live on' for 72 hours whether its money exchanging hands or sitting on a hard surface! I would encourage you to focus on washing your hands consistently and in the meantime, build your immune system through probiotics and eat as organically 'clean' as you can. Pork! Living amongst these farms for years myself, watching how they never see the light of day; the stench that comes from within these pens when the farmer ventilates leaves little desire to eat these poor critters. Have you ever researched what their fed? America is not as innocent as most would like to believe. http://www.foodrevolution.org/pig_farmer.htm _____ From: hypothyroidism [mailto:hypothyroidism ] On Behalf Of Roni Molin Sent: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 12:00 PM hypothyroidism Subject: Re: Re: Flu Risk from Eating Pork So that's what he said. Guest guest
I didn't say one way or the other. This flu virus, as I understand it is passed from person to person via inhalation. I would imagine the pork, by the time you get it and wash it and cook it has no more live virus in it, even if it initially did. The key is the method of transference. Guest guest
You are correct, roni. We are now looking at factory farm conditions as one of the causes of the spread of the swine flu; the version of the flu is the same as the regular influenza A, but it is a form that mutated to infect pigs; the factory farms in Mexico are just as horrendous as the ones in the US. Guest guest
The pigs could also have become infected from humans who was sick with influenza A at some point and then the virus infected the pig and mutated slightly while living in the pig and then reinfected humans who were caring for them. pigs can get the flu same as birds. apparently the strain of bird flu is the same as the human influenza A and the swine influenza A. -- Re: Flu Risk from Eating Pork I am sorry but I do not have much respect for doctor oz ever since he has been on oprah's show. Guest guest
How do they know they have not been around anyone who has it? The incubation period is 4-7 days - by that time, who remembers who they have been around, except for close friends and family. That's why I always use the wipes for grocery carts, carry hand-sanitizing gels with me, and whatever else. The masks are really not very good for preventing transmission. Guest guest
The incubation period is from 4 to 7 days on the average, so one can become exposed to someone who has been in Mexico or the affected states or counties recently and not know it. California is particularly susceptible since we get produce from Mexico, people work in the imperial and southern San Diego counties - who live in Tijuana; and so many people visit it on a daily basis. The virologists do not know when the first infection was nor do they know where ground zero- the location of the infection - is. So, who know how long the influenza virus has been circulating around. The other concern with this virus is that it may be unique to the human body- that is humans have never been exposed to this strain of influenza A (N1H1 strain) and thus our bodies have not developed any antibodies against it. -- Re: Flu Risk from Eating Pork Because they are exchanging air...they all exhale and inhale...air is constantly moving...we all exchange each other's air when we're in confined spaces!...seems kind of gross when you stop to think about it!!!!...so I normally try NOT to! > > > > Yesterday Dr. Mehmet Oz, of Oprah fame, was on The View, and he said as > long as you > > cook port properly (no pink, which should be done all the time) there is > no risk in eating > > the pork. > > > > > > Roni > > <>Just because something > > isn't seen doesn't mean it's > > not there<> > > > > > > > > > >
