I suspect that latter part is something else you made up. I am a

joint/married tax filer but I'm pretty darned sure I would have gotten

$600 if I were single. Normally [although there are exceptions] the

government doesn't punish marriage in this manner.

But the whole matter was one of the stupidest things Bush ever came up

with. He must have had a liberal moment! [ggg]

That was on the letter that I got from the IRS. Singles got from 3-600.00

dollars maximum!

People who were married and or joint filers got 1200.

I got only 300.00 . My mum who is on social security got 600.00. Are you

calling my mom a liar?

nice cost of living raise, your mom on social security gets $600, you and your

husband get a big break on a distressed home sale. You're doing just grand. How

I don't think someone should be paid $20 an hour unless the person actually

earns the money. If he/she earns the money, then they are entitled to it.  That

has nothing to do

with helping out those that can't help themselves until they get back on their

feet. That,

has nothing to do with malingerers who should get nothing.

did not depend upon marital or filing status. However, the qualifying

taxable income amount for these categories may have changed FAIK.

the argument for and against are still exactly as you have outlined. By

I've made lots of mistakes. When I was young and stupid I was much more

Anyway, I don't know what you mean, " When you don't know something be a

free pass on making up false data to support a bankrupt position?

I did post that I don't know anywhere near all the facts about the

stimulus, but the fact that the typical rebate was $600 for everyone who

qualifies is on so many apparently reputable places on the internet that

the possibility that it could be wrong seems minuscule. Besides, I'm

reporting my own experience, you know. I got $600, my wife got $600.

We are not rich. Those are what are called FACTS, and you cannot

dispute them.

Another thing: I have included my entire post below to which you

responded and be darned if I see where I called anyone a name. Anyway,

calling someone " childish " is calling someone a name [which you did; how

" childish " of you! {ggg}] and is typically inappropriate in effective

communication so I try to avoid it. Where did I call someone in the

You haven't got a clue! I realize the programs that have already been

implemented won't be going away...with the government telling us the programs

already in place are going broke, tell me, how are they going to fund all the

new programs they want to add on?

That is a false statement, period. She says " ...the ONLY people who got

more were married or joint filers " . That is simply NOT TRUE.

She even posted later that her mother got $600. I have the impression

that her mother is not married or filing joint but it may not be true as

I don't know where it came from.

When involved in a debate it is not " childish " to point out that your

opponent is telling a lie, although it is preferable in most cases to

coach it in a gentler tone... Which is exactly what I did.

We are not debating what you got, what I got or what Nancie got. We are

debating Nancie's obvious false statement that NO ONE except married and

joint filers got more than $300. That is the false statement.

The system works in two stages. First, you figure out just how much you can get

back. Then, you calculate the benefit reductions based on salary.

First, let's see what singles could get back.

Earnings Rebate

$3,000 or less A big fat zero.

$3,000 or more, paid no taxes $300.

$3,000 or more, paid taxes $600.

Have children? $300 per child

Now, the reductions.

It's fairly simple math. Once you earn over $75,000, your check is reduced by 5%

per $1000 above the $75k threshold. After $87k, you get nothing. Here are some

rough examples.

Single person earning $50k a year with 2 children = $1200

Single person earning $80k a year with 1 child = $675 ($900 - $225)

Single person earning $90k a year with no children = $0

Couples get the same treatment, only everything is doubled to take into account

the two people in the household:

Earnings Rebate

$3,000 or less A big fat zero.

$3,000 or more, paid no taxes $600.

$3,000 or more, paid taxes $1200.

Have children? $300 per child

And the reductions.

Once again, simple math. Once couples earn over $150k, the check is reduced by

5% per $1000 above the $150k threshold. After $174k, you get nothing.

I found these further examples, all based on the 2007 filing period.

A couple with no children, with adjusted gross income of $100,000:

$1,200 couples rebate. A $1,200 rebate.

A couple with income of $145,000, with three children:

$1,200 for the couple, plus $300 for each child. A $2,100 rebate.

A couple with income of $160,000 with two children:

$1,200 for the couple plus $300 per child - BUT would go down by 50 percent (5%

for every $1000 over the $150 threshold). A $900 rebate.

A couple with income of $200,000 and four children:

Disqualified, income exceeded $174,000. No rebate.

There are other aspects to the bill that I'm not covering here, including

mortgage relief.

The Senate version of the stimulus package will be virtually identical to the

House version in dealing with the housing mortgage crisis. The House bill raises

the FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loan limit from $362,790 up to

$729,750. This would allow for more mortgage refinancing using federally-inured

loans. The House version also increases the loan cap for purchases by Fannie Mae

and Freddie Mac from $417,000 up to $729,750. This works to increase the

availability of mortgages on a national basis. Senator Schumer (D-NY) stated in

the article that he would push for those same provisions in the Senate's

version.
