Guest guest
Yup - I've read STTM -- lots of good stuff there. I don't apparently have adrenal probs (even Val thinks my #'s are decent), so I don't know why I can't tolerate Armour. My FT4 was midrange, altho my FT3 was only about 1/3 of the way up the range, but I felt horrible on Armour, especially as time went on. I've been on it for a year. I feel so much better off of it,but my new labs say I certainly need thyroid meds. So, I'm stumped. I just don't fit the patterns I see on these forums or on STTM. I wonder if I'm allergic to some part of Armour because I also gained 20 lbs in the year I was on it and that shouldn't happen -- I should lose weight on thyroid meds if anything. Armour makes me feel hyper and especially makes my leg muscles weak and wobbly -- and that really impacts my life negatively --my muscles are much better now even though I'm certainly hypo at this point. Why can't this be simple??? : ) Amy ________________________________ From: venizia1948 <nelsonck@...> hypothyroidism Sent: Wednesday, February 4, 2009 1:24:53 PM Subject: Re: confused - need help Amy, You might have adrenal problems. Also you want your Ft4 to be mid-range to upper and your Ft3 to be at the top of the range. Have you gone to the site stopthethyroidmadne ss.com? They have loads of info there for you. Things about adrenals. How much Armour to start out with. How the sex hormones are also a part of all of this. Venizia ..
Guest guest
I hear ya', easy it is not! You may be allergic to something in Armour. I know of some who cannot take it because there is corn in it in the form of Dextrose which in the processing is associated with corn somehow. Have you tried Naturethroid. It is supposed to be hypoallergenic. It is basically the same as Armour except for the fillers. Maybe that is your problem. I am considering changing to Naturethroid myself because I have a sulfite sensitivity and corn is sulfited when processed. I am doing ok on Armour but I think I might do even better on Naturethroid. Guest guest
That's an interesting idea! I see my Dr in about a week and I'll ask him to let me try that -- let me know if you try it and like it! He told me in the very beginning that altho the vast majority of his patients do great with Armour, there is an occassional person he has to put on something else. I also am trying to find the best type of allergy tests to do because, although I don't have a lot of obvious allergies, automimmune probs - like hashis - seem to be so connected to allergies that I think I'd better look into it. How did you figure out what you're allergic to and do you think there's a connection to all the thyroid and adrenal crap we're struggling with? Guest guest
There is a definite connection. If I can find the report I had about that I will send it to you. I was taking synthroid for many years, never felt good on it and then found out after calling the company that synthroid has sulfites in it. I cannot tell you how I made the connection other than to say I did a lot of research, watch my symptoms after ingesting things I thought might be a problem and talking to people in the thyroid group, the adrenal group and the sulfite group and making all the connections. I know I am not the only one making these connections either. I wonder what we would find out if we googled " hypothyroidism and allergies " I don't have time to do it right now but I think I am going to do that. If you do, let me know what you find out. Guest guest
it is simple. you are undertreated on Armour. FT3 should be just over range, FT4 should be top of range. Guest guest
Gracia, I think you have this wrong. I believe Ft3 should be AT the top of the range and Ft4 should be mid to top of range. I think this is what it says in Janie's book. Venizia > > > it is simple. you are undertreated on Armour. Guest guest
Venizia, why do folks say that we need our FT4 to be mid range to upper and FT3 to be top of range. This flies in the face of the basic fact that we are all different and top of the range 3 may cause me horrible side effects, but not you. I should think that we stop increasing our dosages when we feel well and not when we've reached a number/place that is essentially not documented anywhere except on these kinds of lists. I'm always so confused when the bashers (not speaking of you) denounce 'regular' docs for going by the number/range and then they turn around and give a range that THEY think is best. Seems kinda contradictory to me. Sometimes my head is spinning from such advice. Amy, try other meds and work up til you feel you are functioning well. If you (at that level) are below " normal " , talk to your doc. Maybe you are a person whose metabolism uses thyroid hormones a little differently than others of us on this list. Venizia, again, this isn't a dis at you - its simply an observation on my part. Your posts are caring and thoughful. mse On Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 2:51 PM, Amy Green <amygreen53@...> wrote: > Yup - I've read STTM -- lots of good stuff there. Guest guest
Thank you MS. I know it does sound confusing but this is from people that have been thru all of this, me included. I could not get rid of my symptoms at the ranges my doctors said was where I needed to be. I have been to many and then found a doctor that did not believe in the status quo and treated to the elimination of symptoms. This is when I started feeling better. Absolutely we are all different and we should not all be taking the same dose. This is a range, this is what many on these list have found to work for them. We do go by how we feel. One might be better at the mid range, one might be better at the top range....it is a range, yes we are all different. I go by how I feel, not just a number. Some take 3,4,5 and even 6 grains of Armour. I take 2 grains. This is what works for me and this dose keeps me at the top of the range for Ft3. OThers are at the higher doses that keep them at the top of the range. Believe me my head was spinning also when I first started getting into this. This is where the majority of people started to feel well - higher ranges than were recommended. Look what is now happening with the Vitamin D. Look at the higher ranges they are recommending now. They are finding that higher ranges are doing amazing things for people from diabetes to heart disease and more. I feel we need to be open to changes. I admit I do not have much confidence in doctors because they kept me ill for so long. When I started to take matters into my own hands, I started to see a difference in my health and so did my family. Hope this makes sense to you. BUT you have to do what you feel is right for you.
