I'm not sure how long it lasts, but when I take my dose around 7:30 am, I start

to feel

a definite down around 4 or 5 pm. I don't think taking more would make it last

longer.

I would think it is what it is.

Anyone know how long a dose of Cytomel works (stays active?) If you are

taking more of it will it last longer in your system?

Thanks!

The concentration of T3 in your blood will reach a peak about an hour

after you take it. From there, the concentration will steadily decrease

until about half of the peak level is reached after 24 hours.

Consequently, we say it has a biological half life of about one day.

The problem with this simple model of T3 kinetics, is that more than 99%

of the T3 is bound by albumin and globulin. As such, it is unavailable

to function as Free T3 until it is released from binding. The FT3

fraction has a shorter effective half life than the bound. Together they

have a composite half life of one day, but the FT3 really has a shorter

half life than the remainder, so the bound T3 is effectively " stored " in

the blood. Some is metabolized, while some is freed and then metabolized

to produce a composite half life of a day.

Only the FT3 is effective, and the binding process effectively

" throttles " the availability of T3 for its function. This " evens out "

the effect of taking a dose for several hours, after which it resumes

the obvious decline. Therefore dividing your doses into at most 8 hour

segments is needed to deliver a level benefit.

If you take more in any one dose, you reach a higher peak at one hour

and more is present at the one day point, but the half life is still one

day.
