Guest guest
Sorry, Chuck, it seemed to me that she was interpreting what you said to mean additives, when it looked to me like you were talking about naturally occurring fluorides. I will go back to lurking. My bad. C.
Guest guest
We are building a home here in Wisconsin and we will have a well. I am very concerned about fluoride possible being in the water. What can be done? We have to use the water. Also, I have a sulfite sensitivity and I heard on a radio program this weekend that Wisconsin wells have sulfur/ sulfites naturally. This is not good. Really, if anyone knows what can be done in this situation, I would love to hear it. I know I can have the water tested but then what? Guest guest
My town publishes the contents of our water in the paper twice a year so everyone can see just what they are drinking. Many places have this information available if you ask. Guest guest
There are companies that sell and install water softeners and water conditioners. However, be aware that some of these companies use high pressure salesmen who are more interested in a big sale than taking care of your problem. If there's a problem in your area it's likely that there will be companies available that your neighbors can recommend that will do an honest job. I don't know if fluoride is one of the things they can remove. When a new well was drilled on my Pinecrest property the water came out with a lot of sulfur. Another company then came out and installed some kind of conditioner and there's not a hint of sulfur in the taste of the water. I think the unit cost $3000. I don't know if the sulfur is removed or what. That unit has functioned with no care or maintenance at all for at least 3 or 4 years. Incidentally, I'm in Florida. Guest guest
Venezia, I bought a Multipure sink filter ten years ago from an acquaintance who had cancer. I asked her how she came to be selling this brand. She said she had gotten the water report that the EPA (?) requires all water providers above a certain size to provide and then went to NSF (nsf.org)to find out what things in her water could best be gotten out by what filter. They have lists of filters. She narrowed it down to that one as being best for her water and found she could sell them as well. That is a procedure each person needs to go through for their own water supply. If you are concerned about flouride and sulfites you should get your water tested to find out what you have. I have not done a thorough search but every place I have read says only reverse osmosis and distillation will get out flouride. You might want to consider an ozone based purification system to avoid most of the chlorine. If you do use chlorine, NSF rated chlorine is purer, though more expensive. It can be bought at swimming pool supply stores and some home and gardening stores. Water softening systems are, as you thought, not the same. They are another way to corrupt your water and add more pollutants. Research this yourself and you'll see. You can get a water sample checked by mail for about the cost of a month of iodine. Chuck

Activated charcoal only takes out a small percentage. Reverse osmosis, distillation, or resin ion exchange systems will get it out, but those are pretty expensive, and it is not clear that the result is really healthier than what you started with. I would go with bottled drinking water, if you have really high levels in your tap water. Otherwise, Brita is good enough. The chlorinated hydrocarbons are probably more of a concern.
