Osteoporosis causes about 1.5 million fractures per year, mostly hips and spine, costing $17 billion and threatening over 34 million people. The induced osteonecrosis of the jaw affects about 2,500 people per year. All things considered, this seems well worth the risk, unless you can stop this by cutting the Armour dose. Os-cal is more cost effective than Citracal. Both are absorbed well, but Os-cal is more concentrated. Citracal is more often associated with bloating, but this is rare for both forms. Consider the source of the report of differences. Chuck
Guest guest
Thanks Chuck, I will take this all into consideration when I speak with my doctor. I do know about the Citrucal with bloating that's why I stopped taking it awhile ago. I guess I should have replaced it with something else instead of not taking anything. I believe another difference between Os-Cal and citrucal is that citrucal may be taken without food. Os-cal should be taken with food. My last tsh was 0.0. which was about a month ago. Guest guest
Do not do what your doc says. Is the vitamin D synthetic? I believe it is. Didn't someone just post here about a good website on vitamin D? vitaminDcouncil, something like that. you want to take the bioidentical form of D which is D3. Iodine, magnesium, boron are other important nutrients for bones--but not fosomax . I will see if I can find more info. Gracia Well, yesterday I received in the mail the results of the bone density test I mentioned I was having. Not good news for me. I now have osteoporosis. I don't know if any of you can give any comments on the numbers or if it makes any difference but I am interested to know if those of you that are on the high doses of Armour 3 grains or more have ever had a bone density test? Do you have problems taking these high doses? In my case, from July of 1999 until now there was an 11.1% interval decrease in mineral density. They are saying that is statistically significant. T-score of -1.4. The mean femoral neck bone mineral density is 0.858gn/cm2. This is not a significant change compare to the baseline in 2001. T-score of -1.3. I know if one is hyperT for awhile, it can cause osteoporosis. My doctor has sent me a script for fozamax. I do not want to take it. I read there are problems with womens jaws from taking it. I already have TMJ. I do know of Boniva. Don't know if that is any better. Anyone?? Now what has me really concerned is that he increase my VIT D from 50,000 units once a week to 50,000 units twice a week!!!! Any thoughts? I will be making a call to his office Monday!!! Oh, I am also to take 800 mg of Oscal. I heard Citracal is better? It never ends!!! Guest guest
Hi Venizia, I was just reading on www.earthclinic.com that taking vitamin D, and vitamin K is used as treatment for osteoporosis. The usual dose of vitamin D especially for people who really need it who is not out in the sun or especially during the winter is usually between 2000 i.u. to 10,000 i.u. at least. I am taking around 10,000 units of vitamin D-3 sublingually. I have low vitamin d also. And it is very stressful, I know. I don't know how much vitamin K would be appropriate. Anyone know?? According to this site, for vitamin D to work the best, since it increases serum calcium to be higher than normal, is for me to take about 250 mg/day of magnesium chloride (or appropriate magnesium supplements such as magnesium citrate, magnesium gluconate). Don't get discouraged...I know, it is stressful. Keep your head high. Guest guest
I " ve wnet through this.. The endo I was seeing at the time tried to put me on that, so I did some searching and decided not to take it.. instead I talked to her and she said for me to take the over the counter calcium with D & K in it,, it's the chewy kind.. can't remember the name, but I take the wal mart brand.. plus to do weight bearing exercises... so I'll see if it helps in about 2 years is when I can have another scan.. My FT3 is just above the nornal range but I'm trying to get it right at the top of the range because thats where I feel better... For example before going on the dose I am now with Armour and Cytomel I couldn't do very much but now I can ride a bicycle and the long I've riden is over 21 miles... I've never ever been able to do that........ Mine is not called osteoporsis it's called osteopenia.. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, I am at the age when it is expected. I am 59. I believe my numbers were L1-L4 bone mineral density is 1.018 gm/cm2. This gives a T- score of -1.4 which is an 11.1% interval decrease in bone mineral density compared to a baseline study in 1999. The mean femoral neck bone mineral density is 0.858 gm/cm2 T-score of -1.3. I do not know what stage any of this is or really how bad this is. I do take Bumex which can give a false reading for hyperparathyroidism. In April my calcium was 10.0. Norms are 8.6 - 10.2. My readings were going back and forth so my doctor figured out that it was drug induced. I did pick up Boniva from the pharmacy. I was prescribe fosamax and told my doctor I would not take it because of jaw problems reported. I found out that is also the case with Boniva after I got it home and read the insert. This is very frustrating. Your damned if you take it and damned if you don't. Hope this info helps. Guest guest
Venizia! Honey, I am soo sorry to hear about this :-( I have not had any bone density tests done (although I really want to to get a gage on where I am now). Yikes, perhaps if she hasn't replied to ths yet, Sam could give you some advice? I believe I recall her sayng that her bones actually got stronger at one point. Have you done any research on it yet? I really wsh could be more helpful but I don't know much about it. I am very sorry you are going through this Venizia, I am sure we can find things to do to make it better though! Guest guest
, Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. It is appreciated. I had copies of a bone density test I had last Nov. by another doctor I was seeing at the time. My numbers were at that time -1.3 for L1-L4. This last time it was -1.4. Comment made on the report in Nov of 2006 states that a T-score between -1 and -2.5 is osteopenia. This is from World Health Org. A T-score worse than -2.5 is considered as osteoporosis. That report also said I met minimal criteria for osteopenia. I don't know why this doctor (same doctor treating me for Hashi's) said I have osteoporosis when this report says I don't. DO you think I am bringing this report to him the next time I see him? You Betcha!! He wanted to put me on a drug I feel I do not need. Pill Pushers!!!! Venizia > > Venizia! Guest guest
Hello Everyone My personal experience with my own bone density perhaps could give a different thought to all this. I've had bone density tests every six months for the last two and a half years. Each time they got worse and worse, despite taking high daily doses of calcium and magnesium (amongst many other supplements). It was only when my thyroid dose (T3 and T4) were raised high enough that my bone density improved for the first time... however it must be done slowly and monitored. I had to teach my own doctor (luckily, with persistance he finally agreed) that I needed higher doses of thyroid medication. I have learnt so much from drlowe.com Wishing you all good health. Nora. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Nora, Can I ask what you are taking and how much? How did you ever convince your doctor that this was going to work? I am having a hard time even convincing my doctor to check my adrenals. I guess I will have to do that on my own, also. Guest guest
Hi Nora, I have a question. Why does your FT4 have to be up if your FT3 is... Why I'm asking is that I feel much better when my Ft3 is at or above the range and my FT4 is at the bottom. I don't know yet what effect this is going to have on my bone density.
