The major restriction on taking Synthroid, is that it has to be at least one hour before and two hours after food and at least four hours away from calcium or iron supplements. What you do during that hour, such as running, is irrelevant, as long as it doesn't involve eating or taking pills. Your skin reaction sounds like a general histamine reaction, or it could be a skin reaction to an irritant. That can occur with certain allergies, including tree pollen in early summer. There are also chemicals used to treat clothing, particularly athletic wear. I would suspect one of these causes over a reaction to Synthroid, especially if you have been taking it for a long time. That would tend to affect other things besides your skin. Chuck
Guest guest
Sherry, Were there elevated parts at all, like hives? Were you tired that morning? How much Synthroid are you taking? Were your lab results ideal the last time you had them done? Was the rash over your whole face or just over the bridge of your nose and cheeks? Sorry, lots of questions lol. My personal experience with things like this is that when my TSH is too high/Free T's too low I break out in " hives " . I call them this because they are kind of similiar to hives but doctors don't think that's quite what it is. Anyway, this happened frequently when I was on Synthroid as well as when I first switched to Armour and hadn't worked up to a high enough dosage yet. Also, on days when I eat to close to taking Armour, at night when I'm working I'll start to feel hypo, really tired and sure enough when I get home I'll feel itchy on my back and there will be hives. They can last anywhere from 10 minutes to like a week. Maybe you're allergic to something? I've been told that exercising can aggravate/stimulate a hives outbreak if you're allergic to something. If it happens again I think you should go straight to the doctor so they can see it. There have been a couple of times I very much regret not doing that. Best of luck! Sherry, you said: Curious on any thoughts on this? Yesterday morning I ran before work. This year I usually run at night. Since it was morning I had to bring my synthroid and take it on the run because I have to take it the same time every day. I can't remember why, but haven't needed to do this before. At the end of the run my face was strangely red (like a sunburn but I wasn't in the sun and was wearing a hat). My face never turns red, and my face was very itchy. I kept washing it with cold water. It didn't go away for an hour. Now, what do you make of that. Think it was the medicine or a weird coincidence? If it was the medicine with excerise how do I avoid it - taking it an hour before I run? Sherry ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
thanks Chuck. I thought I read that you have to be careful with intense exercise and meds because it changes your absorption rate. For synthroid it wouldn't change the T4 rate, but it could affect the additive absorption?? Or, perhaps it was something new in the air. All other factors were the same - have been wearing the same running gear for some time. Used the same trail I run on. Poison ivy is out in abundance, but have never been allergic to that before. > > ... I have to take it the same time every day. I can't > > remember why, but haven't needed to do this before. Guest guest
Thanks . There were no visible hives or elevations - just flat red. It was most predominate on my nose and cheeks. I started to have hives on my face once before, but it was due to a makeup reaction. As soon as I washed it off they went a way and they were very modest to begin with. TSh is perfect i'm told. I wasn't tired, but rather thirsty. And, it was really hot out. I have run since in very hot weather and was fine. I'm going to try running in the morning an hour after meds and see what happens. >> Sherry, > Were there elevated parts at all, like hives? Were you tired that > morning? This can cause both a momentary shortage while conversion of T4 catches up, but it can also use up more of the T4, which leaves you slightly under medicated at the end of the day. The good news is that most of your T4 and T3 are bound by globulin and albumin, so this acts as a stored " buffer " against a severe deficit of either.
