Xylitol - alternative sweetener?

I have some xylitol as well, but I'm not sure if itwould be ok on this

program. All I know about it so far is that it's from Birch. They

call it a sugar but I can't tell if it actually is a sugar.

I think the best thing is to not have sweet things, but the

electrolyte drink might take a little getting used to. In the

meantime maybe small amounts of something would be acceptable.

I looked up xylitol on Wikipedia, interestingly it makes reference to

candida, but it doesn't mean they know what they're talking about :-)

Here's some excerpts from the wikipedia entry. Bee, what do you

think?

Diabetes

Possessing approximately 40% less food energy,[5] xylitol is a

low-calorie alternative to table sugar. Absorbed more slowly than

sugar, it doesn't contribute to high blood sugar levels or the

resulting hyperglycemia caused by insufficient insulin response.

Candida Yeast

A recent report suggests that consumption of xylitol may help control

oral infections of Candida yeast; in contrast, galactose, glucose and

sucrose may increase proliferation.

Health concerns

Xylitol, like most sugar alcohols, can have a mild laxative effect at

high doses. It has no known toxicity, though; people have consumed as

much as 400 grams daily for long periods with no apparent ill effects

For canines, however, xylitol can cause serious – possibly

life-threatening – problems.

Elyse, I do not recommend having Xylitol. Do a search of our message

archives because I think I have discussed it a number of times.

OK thanks Bee,

I didn't realize it had been discussed. There were several messages

on xylitol and I don't know how I missed them. Must have been when I

was really unwell and not following messages.
