Guest guest
I am experiencing big time water retention in my feet and ankles!! It has lasted about a week now and it is really uncomfortable and ugly. My feet literally look like sausages!! LOL!! Also I have a lot of cramping in my legs, especially the calves. It has been going on for a about a week or two, and I'm not sure what's causing it. I read the water retention article and tried adding more salt--which I think made it worse. Then I tried drinking more water--that made me pee more. I am really stumped here... I don't know if any of this is related but I am currently eating only meat and fats (almost a month now). I am also using one cup of bone broth a day and taking an extra 200 -300mgs of magnesium and no calcium. My appetite seems to be on the increase, and I have been eating more, but careful to keep my ratios correct. Because I am eating no veggies my carb percentage is very low--about 2% or 20 grams according to fitday. My fat is 85% and protien 13%. Magnesium is 91mg and calcium 363mg. I am 5' feet tall. Would the lack of veggies have anything to do with this? My BM's are pretty regular for the most part. Any help would be greatly appriciated!! in DC

I am really stumped here... ==>Do not increase water intake when you have water retention! ==>You must stop your salt intake immediately since salt lowers potassium when you are not consuming it. Because you are not eating veggies it means you are seriously lacking in potassium. ==>Until you decide to eat more veggies and when you get potassium citrate supplement, do not eat salt. When you start on potassium, take 1,000 mg of potassium citrate 3 times a day along with cal/mag and meals, and then you can have 1 tsp. of salt per day. Also take a separate extra supplement of B6 - 25 mgs twice a day in addition to your vitamin B complex and niacin, but only take extra B6 for 1 month total. > I don't know if any of this is related but I am currently eating only meat and fats (almost a month now). I am 5' feet tall. Would > the lack of veggies have anything to do with this? My BM's are pretty regular for the most part. ==>Your cal/mag is also too low; take 300 mg of each twice a day (citrate form); the supplements I recommend are in addition to what you would obtain from the diet because your body only absorbs 50% of cal/mag from the diet. I hope that helps. Bee
Guest guest
Thanks so much for your help Bee!! You hit the nail on the head!! I must have been severely potassium defiecient for about a month! It's been about that long since I have only been eating meat and fats. And during that time my muscles and joints ached, serious water retention, protein in my urine, and I wasn't having the usual daily BM's and when I did they were hard little balls. I wasn't sure what was going on. I thought it could have been die off! It's frustrating sometimes because I can't tell if I'm healing or just plain imbalanced. As soon as I got your reply I went to the store and bought potassium citrate and took 1,000mgs. I also incorporated veggies in my diet again with the correct carb/fat/protein ratios for my height. I took a few more 1000mg potassium doses and ALL of those symptoms I just mentioned were gone in less than 24 hours!! I lost 5 pounds in water weight!! That's a lot on my 5' frame! Wow I feel so much better and hope others can learn from this. I guess vegetables really are important in terms of their nutritional content. I am also taking 600mgs of calcium and mag in divided doses. The only thing that confuses me is that guy (I think his name is Stefenson), went on the all meat and fat diet for a year and took no supplements at all. How did this not happen to him? Thanks so much in DC > ==>You must stop your salt intake immediately since salt lowers > potassium when you are not consuming it. I'm so happy it made such a difference. > > The only thing that confuses me is that guy (I think his name is Stefenson), went on the all meat and fat diet for a year and took no supplements at all. How did this not happen to him? ==>That is because the meats and fats he ate 72 years ago (1935) were much higher in nutrients than they are today, and he didn't have any salt - there was enough in the foods. But our soil is seriously depleted of all nutrients which affects the nutrients in animals, eggs, fats, etc. so I recommend ocean sea salt to obtain minerals but it can cause a problem if you do not eat veggies.
