I am so sorry Liz. I lost my sister to lung cancer 2 years ago and I know how

difficult it is. My prayers are with you

Joy

My Sister

My half-sister, Carolyn has died of cancer... lymphoma... she was just 55

years old. Had been through a lot in those short years.. 5 marriages,

abuse in a foster home... but still she held her head high. Raised some

really wonderful children.

I wish I could go to her funeral but it is so far away...

For example. Diabetics or folks with high blood sugar have a terrible time with healing and they bruise easy also. and it takes along time for a bruise to heal. Doesn't really sound like hep c problems. Lets see what some of the gang members have to say. Good luck. See ya. HUGH

I am sorry to hear that .Know that it wasn't your fault hun.

-- My sister

My sister's death...well...I'm not over it exactly...it's not

something that I think anyone could 'get over'....the day she

died...this friday 8 years ago....Chrissy

was always the little follower...she copied me and followed me

around...it was annoying but cute...she was a wonderful little

sister....I thought my parents loved her more sometimes...I don't

know why

The day of the accident...my mom had to work and my dad was home for

once ...he had to watch us...he plopped in front of the Tv and my

brother took me and my sister outside to play....we always played

outside ...so it was no big deal....my sister and I played in the

sandbox and my brother sat and read a book...my sister wanted some

juice so I volunteered to go inside to get some...I went to the side

of the house...that's where the door is...and I accidentally latched

it when I went inside..I was in the kitchen getting three juice

things and my dad asked me what we wanted for dinner...so I looked in

the cupboard and there was a huge metal scrapping sound out front of

our house....my sister had grown impatient...she always did...and she

wanted her juice so she went to the door and it was latched and she

couldn't open it...so she went to the front to go in that door ...she

kicked a play ball into the road and she went to get it and a car

came around the corner and hit her

My brother thought it was his fault...for not watching her more

closely...but he was only 12....I thought it was my fault because I

accidentally latched the door...although that happened numerous

times....part of me feels as if my dad is at fault for it...he wasn't

watching us....after that happened he fenced in the front yard and

fixed the side door....but then he started drinking more and

more...and he cheated on my mom and finally my mom had enough I

guess...and he left....and during that 5 years that I didn't see

him...he called a few times..promised he would come see me...but

never did

my brother lived with him for a while...during the time my mom was

sick...which is also when her second boyfriend was abusing

me.....part of me blames my dad ....for not being there...for not

caring....for not being my dad....another part of me blames myself...

the abuse stuff that my mom's boyfriend subjected me to...is going to

court actually....very soon...after I had an abusive boyfriend...my

mind did a memory thing...and then I started therapy and in therapy

my past all came out and then I told a cop that I had talked to a few

years ago....and now I have a lawyer and I'm working on taking this

to court....very stressful

I rambled enough

I believe that no matter what we do, people live as long as they are

supposed to. It was her time to go, it is unfortunate the way it went,

since you have guilt. I doubt your sister would blame you. Who knows

why humans want to blame someone or something when something tragic

happens, maybe it is part of grieving. Let it go, honey. I know that

is so much easier said than done, and it will happen, just be willing to

let go, and someday it will happen. No need to live with the

burden...it was her time to go. ((((((((Hugs)))))))

I know you won't see this for awhile Sue. I am very sorry and saddened at the

news of your sister. Her suffering has ended and she is at peace now, with no

pain, no cancer.

Your suffering will last for quite awhile though. Take care of yourself, Sue.

And know that your sister is only gone in physical body. She is still with you

and will continue to be until the day when you are reunited with her. You have

your own special guardian angel now. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

> She said yes we do need to do something long term, but to get the biggest

part of our weight off to start with we should be eating very very very

little.

She should read the WW book I'm returning to the library today, the one

about the 10 biggest diet myths. Here's the Amazon link:

One of the later chapters deals with this exact thing - losing weight *very*

fast, thinking it's going to be good for us, because even if we're doing it

all wrong and unhealthily, we're doing our body good by getting rid of the

weight. The book says it's NOT a good thing to do, as the harm we do our

body by starving it is *much* worse than just carrying the extra poundage

around while we slowly lose it. They repeat what all the smart weight lost

gurus have been saying for decades - a rate of around 2 pounds a week is the

healthiest and usually the most permanent. Fast off means fast back on.

> I talked to her about the body going into starvation mode, and she had a

come back for that too. She said as long as we are exercising eventually

the weight will have to come off.

The WW book says that although exercise is good for heart health and general

body health, it really doesn't do all that much for weight loss. Just look

at the charts that tell you how many calories are burned per minutes of

exercise. Even fast (5mph) walking requires over an hour of walking just to

burn about 500 calories.

> She said we have so much fat that we really don't need to worry about

starvation mode.

It's because of our fat that we *do* go into starvation mode, as our bodies

want to retain all that estrogen storage space and potential fuel.

> I just don't know what to do right now.

First and foremost, call your doctor and verify what his directions were. If

it was something stupid and unhealthy, like going on a 400 calorie diet,

find another doctor and get yourself to the diabetes clinic to go over

*their* food plan with you.

>I just don't know what to do.

You already got professional advice from the diabetes expert, AND were

losing weight when you followed it, so why are you questioning it?

I agree with this 100%.

I disagree with this part. There are *so* many benefits from

exercise. I watched a documentary about food addiction and how the

majority of obese people really do have an addiction to food. They

went on to explain that one of the reasons exercise helps so much is

it raises the amount of the 'happy chemical' that is released when we

eat--thus, we eat less to get that 'high'. (I'm sorry, it's been a

while since I've seen it...maybe the chemical is seratonin?)

Also, Bob Greene points out that exercising not only burns the

calories while you exercise, but it raises your metabolism for the

rest of the day (which is why exercising in the morning is more

desirable according to him). Exactly how many more calories you will

burn for the day is difficult to measure, but when you're losing

weight every little bit helps, I think. And 500 calories isn't

anything to sneeze at, in my opinion, because that's 20-25% of my

daily intake! Everything I've read lately (Make the connection, Get

with the program, Winning by Losing) says that exercise is vital to

permanent weight loss.

> >I just don't know what to do.

>

--I agree with this! You did awesome while you were following

the plan they laid out for you, so why worry about anything else?

There isn't an easy way out, unfortunately. We have to change habits

that we've had for years (some of us, decades). We have to change our

relationship with food if we want to lose weight and keep it off. You

can always modify your plan later, but why not just give it another

try? It was working really well for you!

It was in that link. Let me find it on Amazon again, hang on . . .

Weight Watchers Weight Loss That Lasts : Break Through the 10 Big Diet Myths

(Weight Watchers (Wiley Publishing)) by M. Rippe and Weight Watchers

> I disagree with this part. There are *so* many benefits from

> exercise.

Yes, there *are* many benefits, but using *only* exercise as a means for

weight loss isn't that effective, because you have to do so many *hours* of

exercise to work off a substantial number of calories. Restricted calories

used *with* exercise is best for weight loss. Both the National Weight

Control Registry and the Weight Watchers LTM - Long Time Member - Database

both point this out. The NWCR showed that the successful losers (kept off 30

pounds for 1 year) do so by eating 1400 calories and exercising enough each

day to burn off an additional 400 calories. That's *every* day of the week,

not 3 or 5 times a week. For people at their goal weight, it takes about 90

minutes of aerobic exercises to burn that much off. For very heavy people,

like most of us here, we burn off 400 calories in less time because heavier

bodies need more fuel to move them.

>And 500 calories isn't anything to sneeze at

No, it's not, but it takes a long time to burn off that much. Let's see,

according to the chart on this page:

http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist3.htm

even walking very fast - 4 mph, a speed I could only do while marching in

place, never while walking outdoors or on a treadmill, a 190 pound person

only burns off 431 calories doing it for one straight hour with no breaks.

According to the calculator at this site:

http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/Calories.html

it would take me, at 275 pounds, only 35 minutes to burn it off. But, at a

more realistic speed (but still too fast for me) of 2 mph, that same 35

minutes only burns off 225 calories. Since I walk even slower than 2 mph on

the tread and outdoors, I would have to walk over an hour to burn off around

400 calories, even longer to burn off that 500 calories you mentioned. I

would tire out or wear out before I got to that point doing it even *one*

day a week, much less *every* day.

Again, I'm not saying exercise isn't important, vital, or even useful.

There's no doubt as to its benefits for cardiac, circulatory, and joint

health and even the mental benefits. I'm just saying it takes a _heck of a

lot_ of exercise to make it worthwhile when it comes to weight loss.

This is my opinion only ok, so please dont get mad at me. I dont think your sister is right about driking the slim fast for 3 meals or the fact that she said you all are so big that no matter what you do you will have to lose weight and the body wont go into starvation mode.

You have lost weight before. Just do what you did them.....now. Exercise and watch your portions. Slim fast is a good way to get started if you can do it. I tried it and it made me sick. light headed and dizzy. You have to eat something with the meals. go to www.slimfast.com and check it out. If Im not mistaking they have a meal plan there. I hope you do whats best for you.

Tina

My Sister

Hi there friends,

I have still not decided what to do about my eating plan yet. Thanks for all your responses. I will read them again. I haven't deleted them, because I wanted to read them a second time. I didn't call my doctor today. I was just plain to busy today. I did get a call from my sister. I talked to her about what the doctor said and what I have read before on losing weight. My sister is around 275 I believe. She is wanting to have WLS at the end of the month or next month. She said at our weight losing weight fast isn't a bad thing. That the doctor just wanted me to lose the weight faster for other health reasons. I am not sure what to think about all she said. She said she is going to do Slim Fast for three meals a day and nothing else. I worry about her getting sick that way. She said yes we do need to do something long term, but to get the biggest part of our weight off to start with we should be eating very very very little. I talked to her about the body going into starvation mode, and she had a come back for that too. She said as long as we are exercising eventually the weight will have to come off. She said we have so much fat that we really don't need to worry about starvation mode. I am a little confused right now. I know what I have learned about needing to eat to lose weight and doing things for long term, but what she said in the way she said it makes her seem right. I just don't know what to do right now. I am just so confused on what to do, and how to lose the weight. I really want to lose the weight. I am thinking about also doing the Slim Fast thing, but only doing it for two meals and on the third meal just watching my portion size. That way I wouldn't have to worry about what to eat for breakfast and lunch. I hate having to try and figure out what to eat. I like things that are already set for me. I do think it would be too much to do the Slim Fast three meals a day. Even they say to eat at least one healthy meal. I think on Weight Watchers I would feel like I am eating too much and I would have to measure everything. I know that Slim Fast won't be long term, but it will give me a start in the right direction again, and eventually I will have to find something long term I know. I am just so confused as to what my doctor said and to what my sister said. I just don't know what to do. I know I do need to exercise and drink my water. Those two things are very important. I just have to get back into doing that again.

I know I am late on answering this email. No matter what dr says OR your sister we all know YES you can lose it fast but it can come right back. Slow and steady. My sil lost 100 lbs in 8 months. BUT she went to the gym 3 hrs aday. ATE protein based diet. THEN she started eating regular food and bam she gained then some.

Slim fast I did a while back and yes it did work but I got awful sick in the being regular department. Now adays they have meal bars, drinks, and snack bars. So if you follow the diet it can be done. BUT be realistic. BOTTOM line portions, exercise, and water are key.

This is the one with PCOS, maybe lupus, and whatever else she read about in

Prevention magazine, right?

I think possibly *everyone* here did SlimFast, Metrecal, or Optifast at some

point! The things we tried in our quest to lose weight! LOL
