Guest guest
I started my 10 year old son on the diet about 3 weeks ago. We are going slowly, removing one food and adding an appropriate food at a time. It is hard for me to see what he is going through right now. I started the diet back in September or so and needed to be stable before I started him on the diet. He has had a severe constipation problem since infancy and we've tried many other potential solutions without success. He also has Tourette's Syndrome and ADHD. I have read this diet may help his Tourette's symptoms decrease. But the main issue is the constipation. The first week we removed milk from his diet-his choice--I want him to feel like he is making some choices. His face broke out in a sort of rash and coconut oil resolved the situation. The next week we removed pasta in his lunch and replaced it with cold chicken (which he likes). This week we removed candy and other sweets. He is very emotional this week and sort of all over the place. We started watching a Lassie movie last night and he broke down in tears afraid Lassie would die etc. I understand what he is going through, but it is hard to see it happening. He comes in the door after school very hungry, and starving. I quickly get him a snack and he settles down a bit. But he seems hungry and thirsty a lot. I remember I was feeling that way too. He seems to have a lot of sugar cravings. I'm trying to be strong for him. We still have a long way to go getting him fully on the diet. Any suggestions on what to try next? He has had gluten free pizza one night and seemed to melt down. I'm having some trouble with support from my husband and cooking the right things for my son. I am also working a lot of hours, and not home everynight at dinner time. I think things will get better for my son and my husband is doing better and better too. I am trying to be patient with all of us. Have any of you had similar experiences with your kids this age? Do they understand the need for the diet? Is there anything you suggest I have him read to better understand the diet, or just keep going? My son is very compliant and I am so proud of him, he wants to change his diet and wants to be strong, but doesn't yet have an understanding of why we are doing this. Let me know your succeses with constipation too, if you have any and how long it took to see results. Thanks in advance, Jill
