Guest guest
Hi Cat I eat raw coconut - at one end you will see 3 knotches - use a cork screw to drill a hole through the softest one of these. You can then drain the milk into a glass. Next either hit the coconut hard with a hammer or chisle - or throw it out of the window! Cheers. > Do any of you eat the raw coconut? > How do you crack one open without making a mess? > > > >
Guest guest
I love raw coconut - was brought up in Papua New Guinea, where we got them right off the tree. Its pretty easy really. You hold the cocunut between your feet, sit on the ground, preferably outside on grass where its comfortable. If you are inside be aware that you're going to be hammering the cocunut, and you could damage the floor. Perhaps a cement basement floor would work well? At any rate, you need an implement - in New Guinea we used a sharpened stick and a hard stone. Here I use a well cleaned screwdriver and a hammer. There are three little " soft spots " on top of one side of the cocunut. You hold the coconut steady between your feet, apply the screwdriver to one of the holes and hammer it in. You may have to gently " work " the screwdriver out. Repeat on another hole. Then pour out the milk - if you don't do this, you'll end up with a mess. This milk is WONDERFUL to drink as is, or use in recipes, though you may wish to strain it first, as there is often some fiber in it. Then turn cocunut on its side, where it will crack easier. Some " file " a seam around it first, prior to using the hammer. I just use the hammer, and sledge the shell open. I keep pounding it into fairly small peices, as the cocunut comes out easier that way. SOME folks pop the whole cocunut into a 300 degree oven for a fw minutes, the meat draws away from the shell, easier to remove when opened. For me it spoils totally the " raw " taste, and has to do something to the enzyme/nutrient content as well. So I personally would avoid that method. Guest guest
My ten year old son figured it out; Put the coconut inside of two plastic bags. Swing and smash it on a rock or concrete.
