Baylor Center for Pain Management

Baylor Center for Pain ManagementSearch for Pain related information - keyword " Pain " . All of us experience pain from time to time, whether due to a headache, an illness, an injury, or some other cause. Often, pain acts as a warning signal to indicate that something is wrong and needs attention in order to heal. In certain cases, however, the severity of the pain dramatically impacts that sufferer`s life at home and at work. By dictating the time and degree to which you can perform certain activities, pain limits your participation in and enjoyment of life.

Pain can be classified into two types. Acute pain generally begins with an injury or illness . It has an obvious source and serves to protect the body from further damage. Acute pain is short-term and disappears with the healing process. Physicians often define chronic pain as pain which lasts more than six months or which is not resolved as quickly as expected. Despite treatment, the pain has not ended. The source of chronic pain is often unclear or results from a permanent condition, making it difficult to treat. Chronic pain sufferers may experience anger, depression, or hopelessness, which can exacerbate the intensity of their pain. Acute sufferers generally need medical treatment to alleviate their pain, while patients battling chronic pain often require a multi-disciplinary approach to pain.

Our Mission

Established in 1992, the Baylor Center for Pain Management is dedicated to relieving and controlling the debilitating effects of pain. We customize treatment plans according to the individual`s needs and utilize state-of-the-art techniques to aid in the recovery process. By helping patients recover their physical skills and emotional well-being, we enable them to lead more productive, fulfilling lives.

The Multi-Disciplinary Process

The Baylor Center for Pain Management is designed to help patients regain their physical skills and emotional well-being, and return them to a more productive lifestyle. The multi-disciplinary approach involves a coordinated effort by a team of anesthesiologists, neuro-psychologists, physiatrists, neurologists, physical therapists, registered nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, and vocational rehabilitation specialists.

Each patient is evaluated and provided with an individual treatment plan that will help them manage their medical, functional, vocational, social, emotional, and physical problems. The treatment program is outcomes oriented and deigned to help patients establish and achieve reasonable goals that will assist them in overcoming their pain.

The results from a multi-disciplinary treatment have been proven to be superior to a medical treatment alone. Utilizing our multi-disciplinary approach, we have achieved a high degree of success for our patients, including:

665% increase in physical activity 250% increase in pain control 97% of our patients expressed satisfaction with our program and would recommend it to others 87% of the goals set by patient and physician were achieved. (Typically, 14 goals were set before treatment and 12 of these were met.) In chronic pain cases, employment disability was reduced 50% after 3 weeks of treatment; by month 3, it dropped by 63%.
