Guest guest
In 1998, almost immediately after being diagnosed with autoimmune cholangitis, I was put on a combination of the prednisone and Imuran. Within a month or so I was in the hospital with a near fatal infection. My " infection fighters " in my white blood count went to 9 (the doctor said they should be in the thousands). I was taken off Imuran. In December 1998, I was put on 6 MP. I am taking 50 mg daily. My next labs to be done next week are supposed to include a test for the 6MP levels in my system to determine if the dosage is still appropriate. Also, I have Crohn's. 6MP has been prescribed for this as well. After last year and the near fatal results of long term high prednisone therapy, I have successfully dropped to 7 1/2 mg every other day. My next labs hopefully will show improvement to enable me to drop to 5 every other day. They do an AM Fasting Cortisol test to determine that my adrenals are functioning properly with each drop in the prednisone. Hope this helps. Also, remember.....take calcium + vitamin D when on prednisone. Get a baseline bone density test and have it repeated every year!!!!! I can't stress the need for this strongly enough.
