Hi Annette,

Great to hear from you...and glad to hear that you are doing well.

I don't think I have ever seen a video as you describe. Can you put up

a link to it? If its good we can put a permanant link in to it.

I think the further away from the surgery we get the more we realize

that we are glad to have gone ahead with it....but until the first few

years pass I think it's kind of hard to see the forest for the trees.

And of course I have had a good recovery with no residual pain. I

suspect those that still have some level of chronic pain may even take

longer to realize the full benefits of getting a new body!

Have you seen this video of Dr. Paquette? It gives a good overview ofcauses of flatback and decision making for revision surgery. About 20mins. I found it for a new friend who may be facing revision surgery. I haven't posted in ages. I will be two years out in October and feelgreat. I had dinner with some other scoli revisees recently. We areall doing well. We agreed that we agonized over the decision to havethe surgery, but would do it all again.Best,Annette in Arlington

Perhaps this link:

http://community.wegohealth.com/video/video/show?id=2028394%3AVideo%3A17741

will get you there - I viewed it - it is very informative and pretty much confirms that it is pretty "unknown". I had to use headphones to get the volume to where I could hear it.

Thanks for the link . As to Annettes question, now that I have

seen it, I guess my impression is that it seems like its a decent

overview of flatback. My personal thought was that I understood him

to say that he only goes in posteriorly and I believe most top

surgeons treating post HR flatback would not limit themselves to

just one approach....it would vary depending on the individual

patients circumstances.

I also thought DrPaquettes recovery timeline was completely out of

synch with what I eperienced, what most of our group eperiences, and

what both surgeons I consulted (Rand and Boachie) said to epect. It

may be that he was speaking more of the actually post-surgery trauma

as being over between 4-6 weeks....but I guess I don't think that

even begins to cover " recovery " . I would worry that patients that

haven't even begun to feel like themselves by then would think

something was wrong....so I would be sure my friend had access to

other expereinces or opinions before I would have them rely on just

this video for going ahead with surgery. Also...I think he used the

work " aggressive " in reference to PT beginning at 6 weeks...and I

know my own surgeon doesn't prescribe PT until the second half of

the year following surgery generally, so again, I would say there

may be some variation in what a post HR patient can/will do early on.

Lastly, this doctor spoke about the use of osteotomy and spinal

implants but didn't really talk about the fusion to the sacrum and

iliac screws/bolts...so I kind of wonder if he is mostly experienced

with the less challenging surgeries?

No matter what, I think it is clear from this video that the general

orthopod may not have a good understanding of flatback and when and

where treatment is likely to improve the patients quality of life. I

very much liked that he suggested a second opinion is an excellent

idea in almost all cases.

I just wanted to say also that nothing anyone sees here should be

seen as, or understood to be, an endorsement of a particular doctor

by me or this group. Every patient should carefully qualify any

surgeon they are considering having surgery with. I haven't looked

to see if this doctor is a member of the SRS, he sounds like he has

had good training, but neither have I heard of anyone in this forum

using him as a surgeon...and by the youthful look of him perhaps it

is because he is still early in his career??!!
