Hi Joan and Genny,

I can understand that not being treated while being diagnosed sound very

strange to you.

When I was diagnosed with AIH last year I was so shocked my whole world

crashed down. I could not accept the fact that this had overcome me, I just

could not handle it, I was very confused and did not get the answers I

needed. The idea of taking prednison in combination with Imuran for at least

a minimum period of two years frightened me, especially the long term side

affects. I am very skinny, I weigh 58 kilo's (height 1.68) and I was very

worried about loss of bonestructure in the long run. The internist I was

then seeing was so arrogant to say; What do you think is worse? Being in a

wheelchair in 5 years or dead? So I did not have to much faith in him!

Where there no other options?? What about children, what about my job, my

life, my partner, our lives?

All these questions and suddenly my whole perspective on things and life

changed. The confrontation with your own mortality can be a real wake up

call. The things that used to be important to me seemed less relevant. I

also realised that my job was nice and the income was even better, but that

I would give it all up if I could have children. It is very strange, but the

only thing I could suddenly think of were children. Nothing seemed more

important. So I hoped to be able to control AIH with alternative treatment.

I have tried several herbs, tea, special diet, massages, injections etc .

Some things were helping a little but nothing was able to control it. They

kept monitoring me the whole year through.

Fortunately I now have another hepatologist in an Academic Hospital with a

lot more experience, I know feel good about taking the medication. It was a

choice, my choice! And for know we will see how my body is adapting, getting

my live back in order and we will just take in one step at a time and just

enjoy every minute of it!

Please take care everyone

Greetings Loes, AIH The Netherlands

Loes your daughter is beautiful but of course so is the mom. As the mother of 2 sons and no daughters I can't wait to get a grand daughter to play with.
